Reviews for The Underground Railroad

"The savagery a man is capable of when he believes his cause to be just." A whole lotta whipping, not enough underground railroading. The most scenic, albeit slowest train ride I've ever been on. A painful watch not just because of its subject but also its pacing. South Carolina and Caesar remain

What Barry Jenkins has accomplished here is masterful. Deconstructs and retextualizes the concept of the gaze with how society collectively views black stories and how said view limits what is and isn’t told. This is about how to view stories of hardship without sacrificing the agency of those withi

"If you want to see what this nation is all about, you have to ride the rails. Look outside as you speed through, and you’ll find the true face of America." A deeply moving yet emotionally draining limited series. Barry Jenkin's hiring a therapist throughout the production was worth praising. He r

Should be essential viewing for all.

A towering achievement that dives into the ugliest parts of American History and the trauma that lingers into those who lived it. Words can’t even explain the brilliance of this miniseries and how it works on nearly every level through its filmmaking, storytelling, performances, and emotional heavin

Just straight up some of the best filmmaking I've seen in a mini series. A tender and rich ode to a fight filled with heartbreak. Never shies from the brutal reality of its time but takes care to imbue these lives with tastes of the life they all strive for. A cast full of both familiar faces who

The quality is not in doubt, this is a very high quality show; visually very strong and nice form, I just don't find slavery an interesting topic so it just isn't for me. I can see why it is so loved though.

The journey to this show started with an interest in the upcoming film Nickel Boys. It was the opening night selection at the 62nd New York Film Festival, which I was unbelievably lucky to attend for a short period of time, but didn’t catch Nickel Boys as it wasn’t part of my pass nor was I in town

I quite liked the book. It covered a very heavy subject matter but somehow still manages to read like an adventure novel while still respecting the people whose story it was drawing from. The TV show aims for something much heavier with a lot more depth. I think, to an extent it achieves that dept

Barry Jenkins’ “The Underground Railroad” is utterly sublime. At times harrowing and other times beautiful, it’s a show that will take on many twist and turns, going in directions I did not expect. Performances across the board are stellar, as is the cinematography, and musical score. Jenkins’ craft

I struggled at first with the actress choice for Cora but came to appreciate by the end. Barry Jenkins brilliant directing. Art direction and music selection just aided on the sorrowful journey. Very long but so worth it.

A triumph of storytelling If you can make it through the first episode of The Underground Railroad, you’re in for the most special of treats. But be warned, and I cannot say this any more emphatically, the first 45 minutes are going to be some of the hardest minutes you’ve ever watched. I don’t thi

blown away

Audio and visual excellence. Slow to start, tough throughout, but beautiful and profound as a reward. End credit tracks come through like a lifeline right when you need to be brought back from The Underground Railroad's stifling, harrowing past (my favorite: "I Wanna Be Where You Are" by Michael Jac

Extremely difficult viewing experience! Not just because it's 10 hours of almost straight up continuous misery, also because it's 10 slow, elusive hours very much made by an artsy film director. I have mixed feelings about it. I appreciate a lot of what's going on here. It's mostly technically stun

I watched all of these over the course of about the last 10 hours barring episode 1 which i watched like a week ago and man oh man. Barry Jenkins can craft a miniseries. Nicholas britell from succession comes to compose for this as well and you already know he knows how to do what he does well but h

Impeccably made and doing things I haven’t necessarily seen done in this genre before. I really thought this was great - I’ll support Barry Jenkins in everything but everyone’s doing good work here, from the actors to the sound editors. Should get more attention. I watched the last episode and went

so i finished it after how many days because honestly it’s a bit hard to get through as it touches on a very sensitive topic. i would say the serialization of Cora’s story is handled with great thought and a cinematography that is pretty impressive. i could go on saying how challenging it must’ve be
