Extremely difficult viewing experience! Not just because it's 10 hours of almost straight up continuous misery, also because it's 10 slow, elusive hours very much made by an artsy film director. I have mixed feelings about it. I appreciate a lot of what's going on here. It's mostly technically stunning, beautiful costumes, sets, gorgeous cinematography and score, and great acting. With the asterisk that the cinematography was sometimes for long stretches so dark that it was impossible to see what was going on. I found the pacing difficult to handle though. Not just because it was glacially slow, but also I think it would benefit a lot from the narrative being a tad more linear -- the structure could feel a bit all over the place. I also felt that the fantastical element of the literal underground railroad was underused. The series had a lot to say about America then and now, but how those messages came across was sometimes rather uneven.
