What Barry Jenkins has accomplished here is masterful. Deconstructs and retextualizes the concept of the gaze with how society collectively views black stories and how said view limits what is and isn’t told. This is about how to view stories of hardship without sacrificing the agency of those within the story to avoid appealing to the white gaze. The Underground Railroad is a masterclass of visual storytelling that has so much to say. The series is a hard watch but incredibly worth it.
