Did Locke’s backstory just broke my heart? Yes and my therapist will hear about this, I hope she is a Lost fan 

Overhated eppy! Still though, it’s not really anything incredible even if I don’t really understand the extent to which some people dislike this. I will say that I hope the backstories get more widely distributed because there are some very interesting characters who haven’t gotten any yet while this is Kate’s 2nd and while being pretty good, it was arguably the least necessary thus far. As many other reviews have noted as well, the placement and overall calm feel to this eppy also comes across a little misplaced considering that it follows up not only the crazy cliffhanger from last episode with Locke and Boone (which only has one scene dedicated to following it up here), but also the Claire plot, with the lack of focus on it at worst being detrimental to the writing of the characters as I’ll discuss in the spoiler section. I do also have some faults with Kate’s character and the way that she’s written thus far and so with all of those things in mind this review is pretty critical, but just to clarify this was still pretty great, particularly the side plots. 

[SPOILERS]

The first thing I want to mention is that I’m really not into the implied building romance between Kate and Sawyer that’s shown here through their opening scenes in this episode, and at worst find it pretty damn gross. Considering that Sawyer literally coerced and blackmailed Kate into kissing him without her consent in 1x8, something which is horrible, the one thing thus far into the show that I don’t forgive him for and is pretty much just SA, Kate’s lack of disgust at Sawyer for what he did and the fact that she’s still somewhat interested in him feels really gross and lacking in respect from the writer’s. I can’t think of a single woman, let alone human in general in my life, who wouldn’t be absolutely repulsed by what Sawyer did and find it incredibly violating, so the fact that the writer’s would write their women characters in this way doesn’t reflect well on them at all. It almost makes it seem like they don’t actually understand how bad what Sawyer did truly was considering the lack of consequences he gets for it and how Kate is just totally chill with him despite what he did. It’s not even as if it’s an issue with Kate not being able to stand up for herself against the men in her life either considering she literally leads some of them as they stage a robbery in this episode, she simply just doesn’t mind Sawyer’s actions at all in a way that I find incredibly unconvincing and concerning. I do feel like there’s potential for Kate and Sawyer to get together at some point, but having their romance get built up so early on immediately after 1x8 when Sawyer hasn’t shown any truly substantive growth or change just leaves a bad taste in my mouth. So yeah it honestly just really sucks to see the writer's treating their women characters in a way that feels so lacking in self worth or agency, and at worst it comes across as a little misogynistic. The fact that some people found their interactions here to be romantic or cute despite what Sawyer did in 1x8 is really just beyond me honestly. 

As for the rest of the episode, it was nice to see the show starting to expand on who Kate was before the island, and similar to 1x3, I really liked how it once again toys with our understanding of Kate’s character. Kate is a really fitting character for this show given its themes of perception and how we can often see people a certain way based upon how we understand them since she’s by far the most enigmatic character thus far into the show, and the way that this eppy is written plays into that really well. For example, the flashbacks open up by framing her an an innocent victim of the robbery before revealing the exact opposite, once again making us question our understanding and perception of who Kate is and see her in a new light, only for her final flashback where we learn that she never intended for anyone to get hurt in the robbery showing yet another side to who she is, proving that despite her criminality, she is still a compassionate person with some moral boundaries. I also love how both the flashbacks and island plot both culminate to explore Kate’s lack of trustworthiness. In the flashback she’s deceiving others for her own personal gain by pretending to be a victim of the robbery, and in the present we see her do the same as she takes advantage of Jack and Sawyer’s care for her in order to get what she wants, and it’s really nice how this episode functions as a way to delve into this aspect of her character. 

With all of that being said though, I do honestly have quite a few gripes with the way that Kate’s character is being handled as of right now. I’m honestly just tired of the show over-using the mystery of her character and her backstory for the sake of keeping the audience engaged through their desire for answers, and I really hope that we know her full backstory by the end of the season because the lack of clarity surrounding who she is is beginning to become detrimental to her character. By the end of this eppy, although she obviously can be quite caring and has her redeeming qualities (for example, the fact that she didn’t want anybody to get hurt in the robbery), I felt like from the information I do know about Kate she comes across as very dislikable. She’s untrustworthy, selfish, etc, and even if she didn’t want anybody to get hurt in the robbery, staging a goddamn bank robbery with a bunch of inhumane thugs (over a fucking TOY PLANE too) and not expecting anybody to get hurt is insanely stupid and naive and so even her “redeeming” qualities don’t do much to make me like her more, and I really don’t think that making Kate’s character seem like such a bad and dislikeable person was the show’s intention. While I’m sure that if I knew more about this man she loved and supposedly killed I would feel more bad for her, as of right now seeing her cause so much hurt, distrust, trauma and death over a toy plane just makes her seem like an awful person, and once again I feel like because of my lack of context to help me empathise with her, the show makes Kate look really bad in a way that it didn’t intend. Aside from that, knowing so little about Kate’s character makes it impossible to give her any depth and makes her feel really bland since her actions, motivations and characterisation are so difficult to interpret or understand thanks to their lack of context. The fact that I don’t have the full picture about who she is just leaves me not understanding who she really is even though she’s had a huge amount of screentime poured into her character, and not in a good way. 

Moving on from Kate’s character though who is a bit all over the place for me right now in terms of how I feel about her and is a mess in terms of writing, I thought the side plots here were great and handily my favourite part about this eppy. Charlie and Rose and Sayid and Shannon are both great dynamics that each serve their own purpose in this episode, with Charlie/Rose tying into the more emotional, character and thematically driven aspects of the show, whereas Sayid/Shannon drive the plot forward a little more. The Sayid/Shannon plot with them trying to translate Danielle’s writing was nice to see as it drove the plot forward (although that development is still quite minimal), and I’m really glad that the main plot of the show seems to have gotten on its feet because while 1x3-1x8 was a great stretch, it was also a bit lacking in momentum or direction considering how it didn’t really follow up any of the mysteries in the pilot. Also while I still don’t really like Shannon or find her to be very interesting, I did like seeing her arc in this eppy of proving her worth and value to the other survivors, disproving Boone’s belief that she’s not important as she grows and becomes more selfless by the end of the episode. 

Still though, Rose and Charlie are the true standout and their interactions here were so beautiful, particularly for how Charlie’s behaviour here delved into and dissected how people can react or respond to trauma in such a meaningful way. In the wake of what happened to Claire, not only does Charlie shut himself off emotionally and socially, but is also filled with dread and pessimism as he begins to blame himself for what happened, a response to bad events such as Claire’s disappearance that comes across as crushingly realistic and relatable. With that in mind, it was so nice to see Rose, someone who’s shown that she’s able to cope more healthily and still see the beauty in life amidst her struggle, help Charlie out of this emotional state. As Rose’s ideals start to spread to Charlie and bring him solace, it delivers a beautiful and powerful message of hope, persistence, but most importantly, faith. That idea of faith and clinging onto it even during your worst tribulations seems to be turning into a more and more prominent idea with this show and it’s one that I adore so much. 

I also had a few other notes that I couldn’t really find a way to fit into the other points and paragraphs here. As I mentioned in the intro, the lack of focus on Claire’s disappearance and overall more calm vibe of this eppy is a little underwhelming, but at worst it feels contrived and detrimental to the characters, particularly Jack’s. Considering Jack’s devotion to finding Claire in the last eppy as a result of his own guilt and desire to save others, seeing him only mention her once here really dampens that aspect of his character and honestly feels pretty out of character. Maybe he has less guilt or motivation to save her after he helped save Charlie, which redeemed his failure to help others during the failed surgery in the 1x11 flashbacks? I don’t know. I also find Jack’s sudden interest in Kate and her background after not caring and wanting to give her a second chance earlier on in 1x3 to feel a little odd. I can understand how Jack would get tired of Kate’s lack of trustworthiness, but having him go from not caring about her past to immediately wanting her to open up more just feels a little bit sudden, I wish it had been explored or explained better. 

Lastly, I feel like everyone moving from the beach is a pretty overlooked yet important piece of development for the survivors. Not only does it mean that the group will face more danger since the beach was deemed as safer than being in the forest (although with less supplies), it also shows how the group are starting to come to terms with the seriousness of their situation. They’ve now accepted that they need to survive first and foremost as they lose hope of being saved, considering that the beach was the one place where they could have been spotted. It’s a really great way to show how the cast is collectively evolving and becoming more jaded and resigned to their life on the island. 

So overall an eppy that has quite a lot of issues, but because this is Lost S1 which even at its most flawed is both so enjoyable and has such a wide array of amazing qualities to praise, I still like it a lot. 

I don’t think I’ll be able to truly express how this episode made me feel and how I still feel just writing that down. I knew 𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙀𝙣𝙙 would be spectacular, I anticipated this episode for months now, but I truly didn’t think this could impact me that much. This is my new favourite episode ever. I’m giving this a 10/10 but to be honest I could give it a ♾️/10 if this was a thing, but I’ll try to follow my ranking system for now. This is till the higher 10/10 I’ve ever given. Anyway, let’s stop talking about that, let’s not turn into Hurley with his fascination for those mythical numbers, you know. This episode was so enjoyable that many times I forgot to blink, many times I cried, and twice I stood up on my sofa; I even stood crying. 

This review will be divided into three parts so the review will be more easier to swallow for those who read everything. I might use that structure more often from now on by the way. And I want to thank @littlefinger298 for helping me understand the episode better, which will allow me to give a proper review for the entire show that I’m really proud of. I’ll do one review for my opinion and another to explain Lost in details.

I-𝖳𝗁𝖾 𝖱𝖾𝗎𝗇𝗂𝗈𝗇𝗌 𝗂𝗇 𝗍𝗁𝖾 𝖯𝗎𝗋𝗀𝖺𝗍𝗈𝗋𝗒

With this episode, the whole season makes a lot more sense, especially the flash sideways. Looking back, I would have rated a lot of episodes of this season a lot more higher if I had already knew the meaning of those flashes. And that’s what I will do when I’ll rewatch the whole show (not soon though, obviously).
In the episode, we learn that the flash sideways were actually taking place in purgatory. There, our main characters were trying to find each other before leaving, or more specifically, "𝒎𝒐𝒗𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒐𝒏". I’ll talk more in details about where they go and the meaning of that church scene in the last part of my review. In this first part, I want to mention most of the reunions we got between the characters, how significant they were, and how each of those reunions emotionally impacted me.

Let’s start with the reunion of 𝖧𝗎𝗋𝗅𝖾𝗒 𝖺𝗇𝖽 𝖢𝗁𝖺𝗋𝗅𝗂𝖾. Since Hurley remembers everything thanks to Libby, he tries to make both Sayid and Charlie remember now as well. Even if Charlie doesn’t fully remember yet, Hurley does. And when Hurley sees Charlie for the first time since he died, I felt freaking happy. The exact smile of relief, nostalgia and happiness that Hurley had on his face once Charlie opened the door, was the exact same smile I had. This made me remember how their dynamic was so precious to me and how heartbreaking their goodbyes were in the end of S3.
Then, staying with Hurley, after driving Charlie to his concert, he leads Sayid to a dark street next to a bar. There, we see Shannon and Boone going out with some guy annoying them. Once Boone is out, the guy wants to attack Shannon, and that’s when Sayid gets in. He runs off the car and saves Shannon from that violent guy before he even touched her. This is when 𝖲𝗁𝖺𝗇𝗇𝗈𝗇 𝖺𝗇𝖽 𝖲𝖺𝗒𝗂𝖽 𝗋𝖾𝗎𝗇𝗂𝗈𝗇 takes place. As soon as their hands touch each others, they get all those flashbacks. And yeah, even if I didn’t like their relationship very much, this made me really emotional to see those flashbacks and especially to see Sayid getting an happy ending like that. 

Now, another reunion that impacted me way more than I thought it would was 𝖩𝗂𝗇 𝖺𝗇𝖽 𝖲𝗎𝗇. Even if they were already together in the Purgatory from the start, they still hadn’t truly reunited yet as they didn’t remember the memories from their past lives. As soon as Juliet makes the ultra sounds, everything came back. And damn, this was another level of emotional.
Since I’m talking about Juliet, let’s move to her reunion with Sawyer. I heard that I would love The End if I love the characters, and that was right. Even the characters and dynamics that didn’t mattered to me that much in the past seasons, their reunions impacted me so much. Which means, 𝖲𝖺𝗐𝗒𝖾𝗋 𝖺𝗇𝖽 𝖩𝗎𝗅𝗂𝖾𝗍 reunion didn’t miss at all either. I ended up loving them in the end of S5 anyway. Same as for Jin and Sun, as soon as Juliet touched Sawyer’s hand to give him a candy bar, their memories started coming back. What I loved about their reunion is that it didn’t happened all at once, it stopped for a brief moment as both Sawyer and Juliet asked each other out for a coffee "𝒘𝒆 𝒔𝒉𝒐𝒖𝒍𝒅 𝒈𝒆𝒕 𝒂 𝒄𝒐𝒇𝒇𝒆𝒆 𝒔𝒐𝒎𝒆𝒕𝒊𝒎𝒆𝒔." Then, they touched again and remembered every moment they shared together. Another thing that made me giggle my feet were the consecutive parallels with the famous "𝑰 𝒈𝒐𝒕 𝒚𝒐𝒖" which is a very important line between them because since the beginning of S5 and of the 3 years they pasted together, they always got each other’s back. The second parallel was obviously the famous "𝑲𝒊𝒔𝒔 𝒎𝒆, 𝑱𝒂𝒎𝒆𝒔." "𝒀𝒐𝒖 𝒈𝒐𝒕 𝒊𝒕 𝒃𝒍𝒐𝒏𝒅𝒊𝒆". At this moment, I was literally trying to reach out the tv to give them a hug. This validate the fact that I’m completely rolling for Kate NOT being with Sawyer. This Sawyer endgame was just perfect.

Now, let’s move on to the reunion that made me cry so bad. Like really, I couldn’t stop, the flashbacks hit too hard for this one. 𝖢𝗅𝖺𝗂𝗋𝖾, 𝖢𝗁𝖺𝗋𝗅𝗂𝖾 𝖺𝗇𝖽 𝖪𝖺𝗍𝖾; especially the Claire and Charlie reunion. This takes place in the backstage of the concert as Claire is giving birth (again) to Aaron with the help of both Claire delivering the baby and Charlie on her side. This moment was magical. As soon as Charlie and Claire looked at each other, my eyes were so wet.

The flashes from 𝖫𝗈𝖼𝗄𝖾 were also really impactful, especially with the fact that it’s Jack that activated them. With this scene, we got a parallel to John Locke in 1x4 looking at his feet. Unfortunately, that isn’t enough for Jack to remember, especially due to the fact that Jack is the man of science from the very start, so it’s very relevant that he is the last one to remember his past life in this finale. In the end, once he gets to the concert, Kate gently touches Jack’s head and many memories come up. But, even with that, Jack still isn’t sure of what is happening to him, while for all the other characters, the flashes were enough to remember.

II-𝖳𝗁𝖾 𝖧𝖾𝖺𝗋𝗍 𝗈𝖿 𝗍𝗁𝖾 𝖨𝗌𝗅𝖺𝗇𝖽
 
This is now the moment when I talk about the things happening on the island. I think this part grown on me a lot more after watching many explanatory videos this afternoon about what that Light is and so on. This is still my least favourite part of the episode, but if this was an episode on its own, this would still be a 5 stars for sure.

The Light in the cave is the heart of the island, which is also the heart of Earth itself. It’s the creation of everything. And every human has a part of Light inside of them. This is what forges their humanity. The candidates are tested by Jacob to know who would be the best to protect the Heart of the island next after him. The first protector that we know of is The Mother, who gave the power to Jacob, then to Jack for few minutes before he gave it to Hurley. There is also a possibility that the new protector would be Walt, seeing how special he is and knowing the events of the special episode 𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙉𝙚𝙬 𝙈𝙖𝙣 𝙞𝙣 𝘾𝙝𝙖𝙧𝙜𝙚 taking place a bit of time after 𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙀𝙣𝙙.

"𝑰 𝒕𝒉𝒊𝒏𝒌 𝑰 𝒋𝒖𝒔𝒕 𝒓𝒆𝒂𝒍𝒊𝒔𝒆𝒅 𝒕𝒉𝒂𝒕 𝑰 𝒘𝒂𝒏𝒕 𝒕𝒐 𝒍𝒊𝒗𝒆." — Richard Alpert
One thing I obviously regret but I’m okay with letting my imagination go with it is the conclusion of Richard, Lapidus, Miles, Claire, Kate and Sawyer which we will never see. It is clear that they died at some point since they are in the Purgatory with Jack, we just don’t know when and how. The conclusion of Richard though is truly perfect, that line is really relevant to his character and I love it.

𝟥-𝖳𝗁𝖾 𝖢𝗁𝗎𝗋𝖼𝗁 𝖲𝖼𝖾𝗇𝖾

Before going into the explanatory and analysis of this final scene, I must mention this incredible soundtrack that vibrates through the whole final scene: 𝙈𝙤𝙫𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙊𝙣 - 𝖬𝗂𝖼𝗁𝖺𝖾𝗅 𝖦𝗂𝖺𝖼𝖼𝗁𝗂𝗇𝗈 & 𝖳𝗂𝗆 𝖲𝗂𝗆𝗈𝗇𝖾𝖼. I remember hearing this song few months back and it didn’t strike me at all, but it didn’t occur to me that it would affect me that much after watching this episode. Tell you what, I’ll listen to this before going to sleep tonight.

"𝑰𝒇 𝒘𝒆 𝒅𝒐𝒏'𝒕 𝒍𝒊𝒗𝒆 𝒕𝒐𝒈𝒆𝒕𝒉𝒆𝒓, 𝒘𝒆'𝒓𝒆 𝒈𝒐𝒏𝒏𝒂 𝒅𝒊𝒆 𝒂𝒍𝒐𝒏𝒆." (Jack in 1x5). This quote is even more relevant than it already was through the show thanks to the additional line of Christian saying to Jack in the church that "𝑵𝒐 𝒐𝒏𝒆 𝒅𝒐𝒆𝒔 𝒊𝒕 𝒂𝒍𝒐𝒏𝒆." It felt like this quote was as much to reassure Jack than to reassure the audience. Believe me, I take those words really seriously, now I do believe that if I die, I won’t do it alone. 

Once Jack enters the back of the church, he found a coffin, empty, and his father, standing. That’s when everything about those flashes from this season starts to make sense. Christian explains to Jack that everyone in this church is dead, that they were all waiting for him to remember so they could all move on together. Move on where? To the Light. To where every living thing comes from in the beginning and go back to in its end. I’m glad that the show didn’t show any picture or tried to portray Heaven or else, I like imagining this as the Light only. However, we do know that the people who died are able to come back and talk to the dead, just like Charlie or Michael did with Hurley who is able to see and talk to the dead. So, I like to believe that once dead, they all still wondered around together.

The thing that is the most complicated for me to swallow is for sure the fact that there is no such thing as time in this place since time is a Light’s creation, meaning this is something that didn’t existed because it had to be created. So, to imagine that everything is happening right now even if we didn’t see half of the characters died, that’s really confusing. I like to this that as a pyramid or some sort, with every event happening alive taking place in the bottom and every moment happening the Light taking place at the very very highest point, hold in a tiny space with no place to move, while everything below is moving through time. That’s how my brain explains it but that might not make sense for everyone.

In The End, everyone got their happy ending and this is definitely the most beautiful character conclusions I ever witnessed, they all find what they’ve always longged for. This last sequence known as The Church Scene is also my favourite moment of tv as of right now, this is even more dear to me than the last sequence of Six Feet Under.
I believe Locke’s happy ending is related to his faith, that he was right to have faith all along and to believe in the island and that they were all special and predestinate to something all along. For Boone, his happy ending is and has always been is sister. For all the others, they are with their loved ones. Because in the end, it’s always about love. Lost is the only show which allows to every character his happy ending. In some way, knowing that Jacob chose each one of them, I like to think that he also chose each one of them for each other, to be sure that they would find happiness on the island, THE happiness they’ve been looking for and couldn’t find out there off the island. 

The last moments of Jack happening in parallel of the Church scene were also perfect. I love how the last scene takes place in the same place where everything began. I swear, rewatching the opening scene of the pilot feels so much more different after that. I recommend doing this.

I use this review to let you know that I’m not done with Lost yet, I’ll rewatch many episodes in some specific order I thought about (as most Locke episodes from the first season in a flashback chronological order). This might take me a week or so but I’ll still watch two shows at the same time: 𝙁𝙡𝙚𝙖𝙗𝙖𝙜 and 𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙈𝙮𝙨𝙩𝙚𝙧𝙞𝙤𝙪𝙨 𝘾𝙞𝙩𝙞𝙚𝙨 𝙤𝙛 𝙂𝙤𝙡𝙙 but I will review only the seasons for those because I want to focus on my two reviews of the show (one about my opinion and the other will explain Lost).
