Ts ain’t disappointing at all

Undoubtedly the best so far. This was absolutely amazing in terms of providing payoffs, interesting and compelling material for every single character, intensity, basically anything that you could think of and want not only when it comes to this show, but season finales as a whole. What a great way to tie together the season overall that significantly improves it as a whole and provides a lot of promise for what’ll follow after this point.

Edit: Before I get into what I wrote in my original review for this episode I just have to say that this episode is one that gets way better with future context, to the point that while I originally had this as a high 4 star, looking back this is an easy 4.5 for me. Buffy’s character is solid throughout the majority of the season but this is where she really comes into her own as a character (thus also meaning that this is basically where the show in general starts to pick up its identity as a result too) because so much of what happens here feels more important and relevant with how certain ideas here feel more meaningful in terms of her later writing, arc, characterisation, etc. The way this episode delves into the cruel, tragic nature of the slayer role and how so much of Buffy’s personal impact as a character is her willingness to defy that role and choose what she personally wants above that, the way the show uses the slayer role as a metaphor for and exploration of our feelings around death and mortality, the question of whether or not Buffy in some way craves death as a release to her struggle as we see in her going down into the hellmouth despite knowing that it’ll lead to her death, the moment of her coming back from the dead with the show’s theme song playing representing her accepting the duties of the slayer (and thus of adulthood in the way that the slayer represents) in a way that gives this season a pretty amazing self contained storyline, the parallels that this episode has to The Gift, the way this episode cements how important Buffy’s friendships are to her in helping her continue to find the will to do what she has to do, all this and even more. Overall this is probably one of Buffy’s best episodes and with that in mind I had to bump my rating up for it, but anyways, back to what I originally wrote. 


Prophecy Girl is an episode about characters reaching their breaking point and the lengths they’ll go to for the people that they love. This is shown in everything throughout the episode from Xander finally not being able to hide his feelings for Buffy anymore and asking her out, to moments such as Willow finally standing up for herself, Buffy reaching her wits end with her life being endangered as the slayer despite just being a teenage girl, Giles being so distraught over Buffy’s prophesied death that he would defy the fate that he’s valued so highly thus far and face the master himself (one of the show’s first instances of Giles’ fatherly care trumping his responsibilities as a watcher), etc. It is filled to the brim with amazing revelations, character moments and more and is without a doubt the most balanced, entertaining and solidly made episode so far. 

To start off with the stuff not revolving around the seasonal plot’s climax, the character drama and dynamic culminations were pretty great here. This was probably Xander’s best episode so far. His entitlement and the way he takes Willow’s love for granted and/or only properly reciprocates it for her when it benefits him or he has no other choice makes for some really compelling and fitting characterisation that was delved into really well here, even though it hardly makes him that likeable. I can see an argument for how the show lets him off the hook narratively despite how shitty and possessive he was to both Buffy and Willow by having him sort of be a saviour figure with bringing Buffy back to life, but for me personally I think him ultimately saving Buffy works. To me it doesn’t lessen the consequences provided by him essentially getting none of the stuff he wanted earlier in the episode after his entitled behaviour caught up to him, rather just helping to show the full scope of his character in one episode to make for a pretty meaningful, definitive piece of exploration for him, showing everything from his worst traits to his best. Most notably showing how despite his own personal motives and convictions, he’s selfless enough that he’ll put all of that aside for those he cares about in order to stand up for them (such as when he teamed up with Angel for Buffy’s sake even when he’s insanely jealous of him), which is kind of an interesting parallel to Buffy here as well. Him saving Buffy is also one of many great pieces of growth in the episode since what he’s dealt with in a lot of the season thus far was struggling with feeling useless or weak in comparison to the others, vs here where he literally saves the slayer from death.

With all of that praise being said, I especially like the event of Willow turning down Xander’s proposal to go to the dance for how it impacts Willow and sees her changing from the start of the season (especially because I love and am way more invested in Willow than I am Xander). Seeing Willow refuse to go to the dance following him asking Buffy out and Buffy saying no to him is such a meaningful piece of growth for her considering how much she’s let others basically just walk all over her up to this point and previously would’ve done anything to gain Xander’s love in any form. I’m pretty sure there was a line in the pilot where she mentioned how she’d do literally anything for her friends no matter how it affects her personally or her own comfort over it, and if anything Xander is the person she’d give the most for considering her feelings for him, so her understanding how wrong Xander’s actions were and not doing stuff she isn’t comfortable with for the sake of others is super strong, well done and empowering character development. Another thing that I find really interesting about this is that in an episode that is otherwise about characters putting their own needs to the side for the sake of others, this is the exact opposite, and this contrast is so fitting for Willow’s character as unlike the other members of the cast, the character flaw she has to overcome wasn’t thinking less of her own needs rather than those of others or acting upon her love for other people, but rather thinking of her needs and acting upon her love for herself, so in her own way this episode challenges her character to change her nature and overcome her greatest flaws. It’s a nice piece of development and I’m excited to see how they follow it up, with next season maybe not quite showing her being fully confident, independent and capable of standing up for herself just yet, but still being more capable of setting boundaries and prioritising herself from this point onwards. 

I will say though that even if this is moreso a fault and criticism of the season leading up to this episode than the episode itself, I wish that these payoffs had been a little more built-up leading to this eppy. The content here in regards to Buffy and Giles was set up well, largely in part thanks to how 1x10 shows Buffy’s fear of facing the master and her own mortality (although it still would have been nice to see more of Buffy gradually growing tired of her life constantly being at risk throughout the season following the pilot to lead up to the “I quit” scene), as well as Giles’ fear of letting down his role as Buffy’s protector, but in regards to the relationship stuff with Willow/Xander and Buffy/Xander I think that this criticism still sticks. I think there are scenes throughout season 1 that most definitely reinforce their feelings for one another but speaking generally for most of the season it really felt like the 3 of them were just friends, and in general in most of the less main plot or character driven eppys the show doesn’t really provide any real characterisation to the cast to make these payoffs or character moments feel more natural and earned. A show like The Shield gets a lot of shit because it has episodes that some people would consider “filler” and don’t add much to the overarching story (or if it does it’s in a fairly marginal way that you only really appreciate once things have started to add up by the end of the show), but even in those filler episodes some really potent and well thought out characterisation is on display, the main dynamics are being explored, strengthened and built up to help make its later payoffs feel more earned, and the characters’ journeys, growth and development is being moved forward. Buffy doesn’t do that as much or as often so I hope that it improves upon that soon. This is moreso a criticism of the season as a whole than this stellar eppy though don’t get me wrong, but I do think this episode could have hit a little harder if it weren’t for this more universal issue. 

Having discussed all of that now, it’s time to get to the real star of the episode which is unsurprisingly BUFFYYYYY OH MY GOD. I don’t even have any truly in depth analysis to provide surrounding this point in the episode but seeing her finally reach her breaking point with being the slayer and all that it entails was absolutely amazing, and it goes without saying that the acting from SMG in THAT scene is absolutely heartbreaking and will be sticking with me for a long time. Up until this point Buffy has pretty much faced her role as the slayer with a kind of defiant and jaded attitude as if she was accustomed to it by now and merely saw it as a sort of inconvenience for the most part, so finally seeing that slip and getting a grasp of just how hurt, alone and afraid she is at having to face her own mortality at such an early age as well as everything else she’s gone through was so incredible. 

However, her deciding to instead fulfill her destiny as the slayer rather than quitting like she wanted to even if it inevitably means death at a certain point (because even ignoring the prophecy Buffy has always known that it’s something she’ll need to face because of her destiny one day) after seeing how hurt, scared and traumatised Willow was at the impending consequences of the vampires’ actions is so moving and telling for her character in how it shows how Buffy still finds the will to be the slayer despite the toll it may take on her. She does it for the sake of protecting others, because ultimately she’d do anything for the sake and comfort of the people she loves. Her being able to set aside and in some way reckon with her fate because of how much she cares for those around her is an utterly beautiful display of her character that really goes to show how inherently lovable and good natured she is. She is constantly faced with so much to the point where throughout many points in the series it seems like it’ll break her or she can’t keep going, but no matter what she keeps on fighting and a big part of that is because of her desire to help others, and specifically her desire to help the people that she cares about that make life worth living to her. Aside from that aspect of her character work, the scene with her mother was one of the most well written interactions of the series so far too (lines like Buffy’s mother saying “is it written somewhere?” in regards to why Buffy can’t go to the dance or Buffy saying “you had your whole life ahead of you. Must be nice.” come to mind in how they point out Buffy’s struggle and disconnect as a result of being the slayer), directly showing how Buffy can’t ever be understood by those that she loves because they have no idea what she has to face/what she’s going through. Lastly, Buffy learning that the prophecy coming true was actually her fault and that all the trauma she endured was avoidable if she hadn’t gone to face the master was a truly heartbreaking way to tie together this portion of her arc in the episode and I can’t wait to see how it affects her considering that she’s already grappled with a lot of internalised guilt up until this point. Genuinely give my girl a break goddamn she has gone through so much already and she deserves none of it. 

As for criticisms regarding the plot to do with the master and the prophecy, I do wish that Buffy inadvertently bringing the return of the master could have at least had some semblance of consequence for the cast. Without the master actually ending up hurting or affecting anyone, it kinda makes the fact that Buffy was the one who brought him out of hell and all the character work and guilt it should have instilled within her feel a bit weightless and as if they were just putting Buffy through needless suffering for no justifiable reason. Still, the more traditionally satisfying resolution to that conflict felt nice and very earned for her character at this point. Buffy deserved a win or some sort of break, and if anything I feel like it was a bit premature for any real consequences to the story as I’m sure there’s still lots more of that in store to come, I just wish that with the direction they chose to take they had omitted the detail of how the master couldn’t have came back from hell without Buffy. Plus I don’t really care about it that much because either way the way they executed the action sequences here was insanely fun. Cordelia smashing the car through the school, Buffy’s banter against the master, it was just so damn enjoyable. I will say that even though he served his purpose, the master is hardly a crazy good or interesting antagonist but that’s still not that big of a deal because as I said, he still did what he needed to which was to be a basic antagonist who doesn’t do much more than threaten the lives of the cast as a way to explore them further, even if he’s not that compelling on his own. 

As I said in the intro, literally EVERY character was great here so that even includes the ones that I haven’t mentioned thus far too, which I’ll quickly get around to discussing now. Giles was so good here and I really didn’t expect 1x10 to set up so much of his conflicts later up in such great fashion the way that it did, but considering that his greatest fear there was to let Buffy down or see her die it added a lot more weight to how he behaved throughout this episode. Seeing how distraught he was over Buffy’s fate after being the voice of reason and calm in an otherwise immature, uncollected setting throughout the season was really impactful, plus I loved seeing him willing to go to face the master instead of Buffy for her sake (I love their dynamic so much) and him having another teacher that he can be a magic nerd with through his interactions with Ms. Calendar makes for some nice stuff too. Even Angel probably had his best eppy yet here with his screentime actually feeling necessary and not overly done, and the confrontation he has with Xander, essentially forcing him to prove his “human” side in a way that cements the more humane traits of his character was solid. Although that’s still a really low fucking bar I hate him so much

So yeah a fantastic episode overall, I’m not quite sure if it’s a 4.5 for me because as great and fun as this was it didn’t necessarily blow me away (which would be my current standard for a 4.5), but it’s an amazing episode nonetheless.

Your honour, you weren’t even IN Shibuya

Really nice episode, so far this is definitely the one I have the least to say about just because it's sort of filler-y but even then I don't think this warrants the low ratings. Just really fun all around. It's hard for me not to be entertained by this show, and aside from that this still sticks to the show's usual themes regarding not fitting in and feeling understood by the world around you so it's not like this is complete filler that does absolutely nothing. The concept of all of them swapping bodies as a way to understand that living as each person comes with certain hardships and no one's life is essentially “easier” than the others just because it may seem like they have less hardships on the outside was really well done and leaves the audience with a beautiful message as most episodes of this show tend to do. Particularly the stuff with King was the most interesting to me. It’s easy to dismiss him as his own character with emotions and layers because he’s mainly just pampered with love and affection as he’s the show's dog who's just there to be cute (which is fair to be honest just look at him ugh), like Eda and Luz do here. However, once Eda transforms into him she learns that even love and affection in excessive amounts can be a bad thing as it causes him to not get treated as seriously as he might want to just because of who he is and the way he looks in comparison to everyone else. It reminds me a lot of how people tend to subtly dehumanize attractive people by reducing all their talents and what makes them a unique, individual person to only their looks towards the point where they see them as nothing more than a pretty face or a nice body. There are so many more components to what makes a person's existence have value and I love the way that this episode explored that through using animals as an example–something else that we as humans don't tend to treat with the respect they deserve or respect their boundaries–because it isn’t nearly as talked about as it should be. I also liked seeing King using the fact that he's human for a day towards his advantage by doing things that he usually couldn’t get others to go through with due to the person that he is. They all seize their opportunities being each other towards their fullest advantage and as a result it allows all of them to come to terms with understanding one other on a much deeper, profound level than before by the end which is a really sweet way to end things off.
