Genuinely one of my favourites of the show??? This rating might go down with time but I honestly enjoyed this so much, such a phenomenal eppy that redeems the fact that one of the other three Frank centric eppys (Frank’s Brother) is as mid as it is. Having just finished this eppy I’m honestly sobbing and am so satisfied with this as a conclusion to both this season and my 8 month journey with this show. 

Okay first of all I just want to say that Bonnie being in this eppy highkey made me so sad like I genuinely teared up a little when she showed up on screen knowing that it’ll be her last appearance in the show ☹️ And then that tribute at the end of the eppy omg I sobbed ☹️☹️☹️ I hope Lynne is resting in peace and I’m so glad that the show gave her such a great token of appreciation to end her brilliant inclusion in this show, an amazing side character and actress who will be appreciated for many years to come 💖💖💖

Now onto the analysis type stuff. I loved how this tied together this season’s concept of parodies so nicely, the parody of mawkish reality TV here is so insanely accurate that it blew me away and definitely stands as my favourite eppy of the season to take this approach. Episodes where the gang’s awfulness is highlighted through just how much they contrast regular behaviour and expectations in certain contexts such as 10x8 are great and so hilarious and this exemplified that SO well. 

This is also a genuinely amazing character piece for Frank that did a great job of exploring his unconventional view of love, as well as what he finds meaningful and most important in his lifestyle in general which has always been something about him that intrigued me so much. I’ll keep it brief because I want to save most of what I have to say for my Sunny full show review where amongst other things I’m going to analyse every member of the cast, but he’s always been so interesting to me because he’s both one of the most nihilistic and hedonistic characters I know in the sense that his view of the world is incredibly shallow which leads him to live his life based on what he enjoys regardless of how depraved or immoral it may be, so seeing this eppy take a genuinely touching approach where he finds some kind of meaningful connection with someone who’s right for him, no matter how unconventional their love may be, is a really beautiful way to cement that Frank does in fact have deeper, more meaningful desires in his life that he simply suppresses deep down. I love whenever this show pulls off something sweet and sincere so it was a great end to the season and one of my favourite character moments for Frank, that goated weird old man has a wife now and I couldn’t be happier 🥹

Oh and I guess I better address the whole Cock Chewa thing too, I remember when the trailer for this season came out people were saying that it was cringe but I honestly find it so fitting for this show to do something as ridiculous as this considering how it’s always made fun of current events in its own way. The way this eppy satirised social media and its shallowness through that side character was pretty hilarious to me, it perfectly fitted with this eppy and its exploration of Frank and his desires, and if anything how silly it comes across is just a product of how silly the world itself (that Sunny has always tried to critique and satirise) is right now. After all the suffering that the Hawk Tuah meme put me through last year it was all worth it for this Sunny eppy, as if this show couldn’t become more goated and make my life even better than it already did 🥹🥹🥹 Oh and Dee saying she’ll “barf on it” helpppp I love her so much 💗

I’m also really happy that the gang made an appearance :) I was worried that this eppy would be too detached from the show’s typical humour and group dynamics to really work so it was nice to see them and thus make their inclusion in 17x7 a little more meaningful. “I think we all know Disney is never gonna air this” was typical great meta Sunny too. The dinner scene was so fucking funny omg 😭 Plus, Charlie’s jealousy leading him to try and blow everything up was perfect too, I love his dynamic with Frank so much and the gangs schemes blowing up in their faces is an amazing formula for this show that once again worked here. 

I don’t know what else to say, after 8 months this is where I say goodbye to this show for now and it genuinely physically pains me to do, I’ve never felt this way having to end a show before 💔💔💔 But this was a great way to leave it off and although I’m not going to review this season just yet, it was incredible and has really cemented to me that with the exception of S14 and some of S15 I really don’t think the show has remotely fallen off at all. Also since the show has been doing its formula of having a great single character centric finale eppy each season recently, I hope Dee gets a great one for S18!

Really great season, around on par with season 8 for me or maybe slightly below it but still very great and impressive nonetheless. There's not really much of a difference between storytelling techniques, episode concepts, dynamic pairings, and stuff like that in comparison to season 8 that stands out here (which isn't a bad thing obviously they’re both super consistent and funny) so unfortunately this review will probably be a little short. Although I will say that this is without a doubt the most, or at least one of the most creative seasons yet, 9x1 seeming like a rare heartwarming episode for the gangs biggest punching bag until the very end, 9x3 being such a bold satire to reflect how one of the longest running sitcoms constantly gets snubbed at award shows, and 9x6 being a fantastic demonstration that shows us how very different each member of the gang reacts under the same, possibly life-threatening circumstances. They’re all very unique ways of exploring how our characters get influenced by one another's behavior or in 9x3’s case, a very daring way of throwing shade towards award shows.

With that being said, I do really want to talk about Mac because he absolutely shines here and this is definitely my favorite season for his character yet. In comparison to characters like Dennis or Charlie, who are really popular amongst fan favorites of the show just for how crazy or funny they are, I feel like Mac has always been kept somewhat tame (emphasis on somewhat because all these people are still insane) in the sense that he’s not as willing to do such terrible things, or they at least don’t come to him naturally without some sort of influence as opposed to every other member of the gang, and I absolutely loved the way that was explored thoroughly in this season specifically. Particularly in 9x5 ‘Mac Day’, I loved how the subtle dissection of his character, knowing that he has the choice to put the gang through whatever he wants and still not deciding to anything immoral or dangerous with that power demonstrates how he might be the only member of the gang that could have genuine potential to recover from their actions and become a good person, and how much of his occasional terribleness stems from being apart of the gang in a really interesting manner. All of the things he decided to do bothered everyone else because they were "annoying" rather than wrong, so it was pretty uplifting to see that he didn't use his full power over the gang to commit dangerous and harmful acts, but rather to do things he genuinely enjoys, most likely because the gang wouldn't want to join him in these activities in any other scenario, which is absolutely devastating when you think about it, he can’t even manage to not feel unappreciated on his own day I felt so awful for him here.

In general too I just felt like Mac was given so many more chances to stand out here, him and Dee pretending and failing to be a couple in 9x3, his entire role in 9x9, and being paired up with Dennis in 9x10 to try to make amends with people they've done wrong are only some of his incredibly funny moments in this season. Also, the more obvious hints that he's gay such as country Mac being a direct parallel to who he’d embody if he were more secure with his sexuality or the very gay shower scene in 9x9 were great too. I'm so glad they're being less subtle with it as it allows for his denial of it, and it makes how he copes using religion and has a major internal conflict with himself between his faith and identity all the more devastating. This review has turned into me obsessing over Mac more so than anything else at this point whoops but I don't know I just loved Mac here its so easy to sympathize with him after everything he deserves better ☹️❤️‍🩹

What is Gemma doin in This is Mid?😭 

I actually love this. Definitely nowhere near the emotional level as the pilot but this was heartwarming. Should’ve known that the families were connected? I really had no idea, but it was a nice surprise. 

The overweight sessions are kinda mid, nothing too fancy but it’s somewhat entertaining, at least when Kate rages. 

I love Randall and William, those are two are probably my favorites so far even though Kevin and Jack have been great as well. I know I’ll love this show, hope this show continues to have the perfect balance of heartwarming and heartbreaking episodes.

I can't believe Sunny 17 went out on a happy note. Not a cynical, or dark one, but a truly heartwarming end to the season! And the final tribute got me emotional.
