Just straight up some of the best filmmaking I've seen in a mini series. A tender and rich ode to a fight filled with heartbreak. Never shies from the brutal reality of its time but takes care to imbue these lives with tastes of the life they all strive for.
A cast full of both familiar faces who shine and new ones who burst onto the scene. Aaron Pierre in particular is just a special talent. Nicholas Britell doing unparalleled work on the score and a perfect set of end-of-episode needle drops. Don't *love* the way it concludes but the ride is undeniable and it has a dozen moments that rock you to your core in one way or another.
Huge bummer it's been so underseen- I think in part because of its release at a time where people weren't hungry for something this "harsh"- but I have hope it'll be discovered over time as we realize Barry Jenkins is one of the best we have.
