In its first season, this series offered a unique perspective into a very unknown world to white people like myself. The second season continues to peak into that world, while also helping progress the main character and his examination.
Ramy Youseff plays the titular character of the same name and does so perfectly. He is so incredibly charming, which helps you love his character even though he makes really poor decisions.
Mahershala Ali is a welcome addition to this season providing an incredibly intense presence which is a conscience for our main character and unreachable goals that he strives to achieve. However, Ali subtly shows his character’s faults as he tries to be faithful and a role model.
The two of them have a great chemistry where their energies balance back and forth between one another making for a unique watch and remarkable fun.
Ramy is a flawed character, but also a human character. He has good intentions and his constant need to improve himself turns into a selfish quest, which is a fascinating look into humanity.
Ramy’s pursuit to be unselfish takes a meta approach to the season where several of the episodes have a different central character from his family at the forefront. Each story showed the difficulty of that family member trying to be themselves, be faithful, and acclimate to American culture.
The theme of the past two seasons has been trying to be a proper Muslim in modern times, and his pursuit for that ends up backfiring because of the culture and his own weaknesses, forming brilliant conflict.
