‘Sanctuary’ doesn’t always benefit from its trans-Pacific cultural differences but it presents an interesting fictive look into the world of sumo and a little of the fish-out-of-water charm of other fight sport-inflected Netflix fare like ‘Cobra Kai’, ‘Heels’, or ‘Glow’. The English dubbing is good but the translation could use some definite tightening for English audiences. Standout leads Wataru Ichinose and Shioli Kutsuna and the ranks of the Ensho suno stable—including perfectly-cast Pierre Taki, the stable master at Ensho—bring compelling and humanizing drama to a brutal and often bloody Japanese sport tradition. If you’re willing to engage with a story involving protracted sumo tradition, this may be your jam. If not, your mileage may vary.
