Saw someone call this show "manga-like" and I can't think of a better term to describe it. Reminiscent of several delinquent seinen stories I had read over the pandemic. Gritty, brutal circumstances of the industry highlighted, mixed with hyper-stylized scenes of action emphasising the weight and force these wrestlers pit against one another. Sanctuary follows a talented albeit rebellious young man who comes to the sport for all the wrong reasons, shaking up the core of sumo's rich traditions. Much like the reporter, you could view him with disgust, or maybe amusement of such a character contrasting the people around him, but gradually, he's able to pull you into this unfamiliar world and never let go. Even by season's end, I'm left waiting in anticipation for more.
