Aria (2005)
A stunning, beautiful near-perfect work of art from one of the most underappreciated animation studios whose life was tragically cut short. I guess I shouldn't be surprised how amazing this show was given it was directed by the same legend behind Ojamajo Doremi and Princess Tutu, nevermind the studio who produced Sketchbook. How does Hal Film Maker make some of the greatest animated shows of all time and yet few know their name? An utter delight that delivers a wonderful little inspection into the meaning to live and what comes along with it. Great touches of comedy, drama, character, and an engaging core for what is an iyashikei. I love how every episode has it's own motif about enjoying life that connects back to each chapter. Reminds me of a more artistic approach to the concepts Yotsuba or Non Non Biyori tackled. These types of stories about appreciating everyday life seem to end up so commonly as some of my favorite works period. I'm sensing a pattern of greatness. Almost a little too great. I didn't think it was possible for television shows to be this great, yet Aria exists to show the wonder of animation. I wouldn't blame people who consider this the greatest animated series ever made, let alone Hal's greatest work. It really is that exceptional in just about every way.
