Save yourself the time and just watch the last two episodes

Yes, he was abused, wounded both physically and mentally in war, lived in poverty, etc - but that's unfortunately something many people throughout history have experienced. Not all of them turn into deranged genocidal maniacs though. The film just took his experiences and ran with it.
