A much needed improvement to the first season, the second addition to HBO’s The Leftovers pick ups a lot of the loose balls from the first season, builds on them and rectifies issues that made the premiere a largely forgettable season. Music usage improved ten fold, it still has that remarkable backtrack that steals scenes but it added other great music choices from actual songs that made moments better. It does still heavily rely on it too much though, which as I’ve stated before takes away the punch way too often. But when it lands it’s mesmerising. The episode quality is a massive upgrade too, with a fair dose of remarkable episodes that are easily 5 stars. But it’s two of one and 6 of the other. The consistency NEEDS to pick up. You simply cannot be a complete season when you have out of place, below average episodes sprinkled across the length. The Peaks are incredible but the troughs are down there with some of the very lowest in Television leading to a very mixed season. I do think it’s forgivable though due to the outrageous quality of the peaks.
