Poster for Attack on Titan
Attack on Titan was first introduced to me by my close friend who had been reading it when the story was nearing it’s end. Told me to check it out and all but I couldn’t bother as I was disatisfied at the time with trying to read or watch any sort of anime or manga. Eventually I came around watching anime and while Attack on Titan wasn’t my first it changed my retrospect surrounding Japanese Animation. From the get go, my god was I hooked. Buildup of 80 episodes and 4 seasons; I don’t think any anime or manga could reciprocate the kind of story AOT told and the kind of journey it took me on. You can resonate and love all the characters so much so to be heartbroken at the end. They all play well into the themes of the story: War/Cycle of Hatred, Love, Death, Beauty of Life, Freedom, Prejudice, Revenge, Sacrifice, Corruption and Power, and so much more. The world of AOT is huge and diverse and coherent to it’s main themes. Everything connects and ties up so well to make an intricate and compelling story. From “To You, 2000 years ago” to “From You, 2,000 years ago”. I want to say the concept of perspective and morality is done so well in this show and best done by none other then Eren. Having started with a very black and white state of morality he views the titans as evil, deserving to be eradicated for keeping humans caged behind walls. But as the story progresses and the world of AOT that we know expands we see Erens perspective on the world change along with his morality. Even though he maintains a black and white picture of the world we can understand from this that it’s all nuanced, that there’s no morally good or bad as it’s all a matter of perspective deriving from one’s own personal history. As long as they are two people, they’ll always have a separate set of ideals that’ll decipher their outlook on things. I think the finale really hit it off with this and made me look back and appreciate AOT even more as a whole. Reminded me of Naruto a lot and its take on the concept of morality/perspective in the world. Attack on Titan is a mad unique story. A show that made me love anime and watch more like it. So consistent, like I said there’ll prob never be a story that could match the level of engagement I had with AOT. As well, the amount of things this show has achieved almost puts at a league of it’s own. Even though it won’t be the same, I’m excited to eventually come back to this show and watch it all over again.
