What makes me love David Lynch so much is his unique directing style, because Lynch likes to give surrealism that is often difficult to digest. But how the audience is made curious about the answers to mysteries and all the weirdness that exist is what makes me finally addicted to watching Lynch's other works.
"Beyond Life and Death" finally brought me back into David Lynch's surreal world full of the Lynchian elements that made everyone fall in love with this show, and this episode also had one of the most surprising, memorable and best endings I've ever seen while watching TV.
This episode had everything Lynchians and lovers of this show could want. From the absurd storyline that makes no sense, the dreamlike atmosphere, the dark and gripping horror tone thanks to Lynch's signature haunting sound, and the nightmare-like creepy scenes. When it all comes together, that's when I know I'm in Lynch's world of nowhere.
The first half of the episode was still rather ordinary with Lynch presenting other sub plots in a fast-paced, easy to enjoy, but there was still an unexpected surprise. It was only when we entered the third act that David Lynch's parade of madness begins in one of the most insane and hypnotic journeys I've ever experienced.
We are invited to follow Cooper's journey into the Black Lodge which will later bring him together with people who were once present in his dreams and life. It was in this moment that Lynch shows off his visual storytelling prowess, especially elevating one of the show's main themes of 'good versus evil'. The depiction of the Black Lodge was impeccable, made this one of the episodes with the best production design and directing elements I've ever seen in a TV show.
The episode closed with a fantastic ending, when even the show's image of purity and goodness was overtaken by evil. One of the perfect episodes I've ever watched.
