"In every generation, there is a chosen one. She alone shall stand against the vampires, demons and Forces Of Darkness. She is the Slayer."
I've been thinking about this show alot lately and I went to look back on my series review and it is not.... good to be honest. So consider this my REAL buffy the vampire slayer review. Also I hope this review makes you guys watch Buffy if you haven't this show is so much fun and it is incredible too please consider watching it!
Buffy The Vampire slayer starts out as your typical cheesey show but in its later seasons it turns into something else. It's not usual for shows to grow up and mature as so does the intend audience does but buffy does so as so does the cast. Starting out as high school students the later seasons are the cast as straight up adults with actual responsibilities and facing the challenges of the adult world. The later season ESPECIALLY season 6 which focuses alot on the adult stuff aren't well liked which has always surpsied me. Do you really want to see Buffy at 22 still being in the same monster of the week format with the same old goofy villains? Me personally I do not.
The cast of this show is just perfectly casted I literally cannot imagine anyone else playing any of the characters. From Buffy herself, Sarah Michelle Gellar delivers one of the best performances I've ever seen SPECIFICALLY in one season 5 episode (If you seen the show you know which.) Alyson Hannigan's perfomance as Willow must also be mentioned with her playing the quiet shy girl willow! God does willow change alot throughout the show her character development is perfect even if in some moments I really did dislike some of her actions. Also I like how there's some nice foreshadowing to her biggest development in the show. Honestly just pick anyone in the cast and they will have an episode where they kill it.
Oh also you guys already know I have to mention him. James Marsters as Spike. I have alot of thoughts about Spike which I have expressed in all my buffy episode reviews. Spike is a loveable villain with a heart of gold but also at times Spike is genuinely one of the most disgusting and vile persons in the show. There's just so much with his character and I could rant about his behavior in one certain episode alot (which I have) but in the end I still love Spike as a character. His backstory episodes are definitely some of the best in the show.
Coming up the seasons ranked beware this is just my opinion and I absolutely adored every season (expect 4.) Anyways here it is. Also as much as I want to mention some things this review there are no spoilers, so sorry guys. I guess I can add this but The Key IS OVERRHATED LIKE I LITERALLY LOVE THE KEY SO MUCH. IT IS SO COMPLEX AND THE BUILD UP AND REVEAL IS SOO GOOD. Anyways, here's the seasons.
1. Season 5: why is season 5 my favorite season? Is it because of the absolutely insane move they pull in the first episode? No season 5 of buffy is my favorite buffy season because of the character dynamics and how the introduction of one singular character changes everything. Not only that but this season features the best antagonist of the series who genuinely feels like the final threat. Glory is such a refreshing antagonist considering how the past few were at best great character whose connection to Buffy elevated the show and gave us great character to at worst a boring snore feast that I genuinely had to skip episodes just to get through the plotline.
Every single character in this season has a moment to shine, whether it be Spike with Fool For Love or Willow with Family! Both deliver such amazing character moments, Spike's episode especially really changing my perspective of mine. Of course Buffy gets alot of amazing moments with episodes like The Gift and....
okay I guess we have to talk about it. The Body. Perfect episode of television my favorite episode ever. That's all I can say, if you want my thoughts on it please check out my review for it beware it's my longest review probably ever and it's spoilers.
2. Season 6: Possibly the biggest hit or miss season of the show if you love it you really do love it but if you hate it lordddd will you want to drop the show. This season has the worst episode of the show no question. It has an episode which completely assassinates a character. Not literally of course but the character just gets butchered, anything after will just make you think about what the character did this episode.
On the other hand this season has my third favorite episode, if I haven't been told by the premise of what type of episode it was ahead of time I would had been so so sooo shocked. Honestly it's such a goofy concept that WORKS COMPLETELY AND GENUINELY HAS THE BEST USE OF THE GIMMICK EVER. This season focuses on the Scoobies (yes that's what the group name for the characters is and yes I hate it) life as adults.
Honestly it feels like a completely different show at times, the once happy and goofy nature of the show broken down to a depressing and realistically sad view of regular life. One notable character that gets some spotlight this season is Xander. I hate Xander Harris yet for some weird reason I cannot bring myself to hate him, he has probably one of the most relatable and just human moments in one certain episode that just changed my whole view on him. Anyways I've been yapping alot so I'll keep the next few seasons ranking shorter.
3. Season 2. The introduction to Spike and Drusilla changes the show for the better. The both obviously are fan favorites who bring alot more fun the vampires in the show. Season 2 is when the plot begins to have real stakes especially with real death. It has quite possibly one of the most shocking oh wow shit just got real moments I've ever seen. This is when Willow begins to get more depth apart from her just being a cutie patotie, which is great! We also see the scoobies try to help buffy and try to become more skilled with dealing with vampires when she isn't around.
4. Season 3: Faith. Faith just Faith, I love Faith. She's such a unique character, and we take an interesting look at what a slayer with no real guidance and morals would be like. We also have an introduction to another cast member with Anya, and god, does she just add so much into the later seasons. Her introduction episode is also real fun and has alot of payoff and foreshadowing for the later seasons. We are still in high school, so it's still fun watching the gang be silly and have to worry about high school stuff!
5. Season 1: it's just really weak but fun! Sets up the story and introduces us to the characters. Honestly, nothing too special, but the finale really saves this season. Also, this was the season that gave me a massive crush on Sarah Michelle Gellar 😭
6. Season 7: This season just filled me with anger, but the antagonist and finale are incredible, but lordddd is it hard to get through some of these episodes.
7. Season 4: Has 3 of my favorite episodes, but apart from Hush, Restless, and Who Are You? It's so incredibly mid
My favorite characters! Honestly, this could be anyone in here but here's my top 5.
1. Buffy: Sarah Michelle Gellar is an icon, and buffy will forever be iconic. If you look like her hello, I am single, hahaha. Seriously though peak protagonist with so much growth, starting as a young high school vampire slayer to turning into a depressed seasoned vampire hunter, what isn't there to love about Buffy?
2. Tara: I love Tara she's just the kindest and most understanding character in the show. While she comes in pretty late into the show, she's just such a delight, and her friendships with all the characters really show how much of a sweetheart she is. She really is always there for buffy and her friendship with Willow? So cute!
3. Spike: god he's so cool, Spike is an interesting character to watch as he is a vampire meaning he is soulless yet he feels strangely human. His banter with buffy and him basically being her rival throughout the show is so much fun. Love how he also has some pretty good character growth and really heartfelt moments (lore episodes)
4. The Key.
5. Anya: Anya is just the funniest. This girl does NOT have a filter, and she is so incredibly horny like lordddd chill.
