I'm surprised that I ended up liking this show based on how I felt about the first two episodes. The show starts out very rocky and struggles with a multitude of technical aspects, the most significant being editing and tone. Sometimes scenes or characters come off as silly when they aren't intended to, but the show starts finding its tonal footing in episode 3. 

The acting in this show is the aspect that I can praise the most, because everyone did a fantastic job on that front, especially my main man Andy Garfield. By the end I was pretty engrossed in the story and enjoying my time watching the show. 

There are parts that the show struggles with throughout the entirety of the seven episodes. The editing, as I mentioned before, is very questionable. The flashbacks to the 1800s generally don't work and come off as pretty cheesy most of the time. Detective Pyre's struggle with his faith is interesting and central to the theme of the story, but I could've used a little more resolution on that front (If you want a wonderfully written story dealing with a struggle with faith, go watch Midnight Mass on Netflix).

Overall, I would say that Under the Banner of Heaven is a show that had the potential to be more than it ended up being, but I still wound up liking it nonetheless.
