The Handmaid's Tale
Looking back on the series, this show has jumped all sorts of sharks and is an entirely different place then it was in the beginning, but it still has barely missed a step and continues to move forward despite minor hiccups.
Elisabeth Moss once again goes through great inner conflict and turmoil as she is in a better place physically but still has so many obstacles that she must try and conquer throughout. Yvonne Strahovski plays a character who goes through a potentially deserved hell and yet you feel her emotion and surprisingly empathize with her while still taking a morbid joy in her current foibles.
O-T Fagbenle gives a deeply touching performance that is painful to watch where someone is in love with someone who is always distracted and wants the best for her but knows that can never happen.
Bradley Whitford provides a style of levity to the performance by delivering all of this in a casual nature and yet he still plays this character who is struggling not to be a villain while never escaping that fate and having to reckon with it, where he is both sinister and comedic.
Ann Dowd’s character has taken a back seat in the past few seasons but she has some tremendous moments of growth in this season as she shifts back and forth in morals and allows you to read it through experience.
While this is a fantasy dystopian world, the stories and events within the series still reflect its nature of the news today in many ways as fascism and mob mentality creep into our political system.
The production value of this series continues to be stunning as the scope has widened further creating this beautiful yet haunting future world. The relationships between characters in this season test patience as they shift in the strangest but most fascinating of ways in which humanity takes place within the middle of them.
The entire setting has changed and hierarchies and positions of characters have shifted a great deal and while they are justified they are still both satisfying and painful. It will be difficult to see this series going much further and a wrap up should be necessary in the next season.
This series is currently available to stream on Hulu.
