I'm a fan of just about any sports based show or movie and Winning Time always scratched that itch. Add in the Adam McKay style that I also enjoy more than most people and I'm definitely going to be inclined to be at the top end of people who like this show. I rated Season 1 a 4.5 and it finished in my top 10 of 2022. So what happened? Well they spent too much time in the boring between years and it took way too long to get the juice going so that when they did finally recapture a little Magic (see what I did there) towards the end it was already too late.
The episode that almost brought me all the way back in was Episode 5 which is the Pat Reilly showcase episode. We finally get to let Adrian Brody cook and do what he was brought here to do and it was truly awesome. An exhilarating episode of TV. Unfortunately they couldn't maintain that momentum and we whimper into the finale which culminated in one of the all time funniest series cancelations ever. There wasn't much they could do considering how they chose to start the season with a scene from the last episode. Talk about your all time backfires.
This show will be remembered for the cancelation leading to that final shot of Magic but it should be remembered for bringing Quincy Isaiah into our houses and letting Adrian Brody loose for once instead of being caged in for the next Wes Anderson project.
