"Surprise, motherfucker!" One of the pioneers in the anti-hero genre on television, Dexter was, at several points during its eight-year run, one of the TV greats. Unfortunately, it's also one in a long list of Showtime hits that ultimately fell victim to its own serial killer -- its own network, Showtime -- and its stubborn reluctance to end its hit shows on a high. See: Weeds, Homeland, Shameless, Californication, Billions, etc. With its unwillingness to kill off or hold its main character accountable, all for the possibility of revivals and/or reboots, the network has categorically, metaphorically, and ironically put itself on that cold, steel table, wrapped itself up in plastic, and stabbed itself straight through the heart.
