i think the last seasons unfortunately lack the wittiness (and britishness) that made the first season so iconic. characters used to feel more realistic and had a fire in them that i now see somewhat extinguished. cavendish college basically being an allegory for social media progressive culture (i refuse to call it "woke" which means nothing) works better in theory than in practice. we get it: the younger generation want to be so progressive they end up being self-destructive. but while this concept is actually dealt pretty well eventually, with progressiveness not being ridiculed but embraced with all its flaws, the whole thing just seemed too convoluted for a show that used to tell it like it is.
season 4 introduces yet new characters i just can't really find myself to be interested in. moreover, the original cast is split in different storylines and that can be really frustrating. even so, i thought most characters walked an interesting personal journey, especially Aimee and Adam. Emma could finally show off her talent in a number of very emotional scenes. but I think we can all agree Ruby deserved better... she is basically the only one who doesn't get a happy ending of a sort.
Eric... now i might have to complain about Eric. i didn't like this religious turn. i honestly can't remember how religious he was in the first seasons, but he never seemed too serious about it. regardless, i generally don't like the "fix it from within" narrative that they are pushing him towards. It's just not realistic to think that one gay pastor can change the christian church, the same way a black cop is not gonna fix police brutality.
there's probably more i wanted to say but this is already too long. the finale made me cry so there was definitely some good writing there. even with all its flaws, sex education will go down as one of the best shows on netflix and im kinda sad we won't get to see more.
