long awaited.. 

The forced inclusivity in season 4 felt agonising. It’s utopian. What school has yoga classes? And sex therapists? This is England, not fairytale land. I love the idea and I love the reach for what the minimum should be, but this just isn’t real. 

Sex education season 4 talks about much more serious and important topics, that I do feel it wouldn’t be able to if it didn’t have a mass of inclusivity. Topics like ableism, intersectionality, sexual abuse and assault, overcoming your trauma, teenagers and teenage love. It takes a lot to fit all that into only 8 episodes albeit the 55-80 minute episodes do help that. 

something specific I loved was Aimee’s growth. Her catharsis coming to be art, we know she has her baking, but her photography brought it to a whole other level. We see her overcome her sexual assault through journaling about her own sexual experiences and using her art as her main catharsis. She contrasts a specific part of her mind to express what happened to her in a way different from her own physical voice, although she is still using an inner voice in her art. 

Cal’s storyline goes far deeper than ever before in this new season. We see that cal is struggling more than ever, with being attached to the gender identity of a girl. As Cal faces their period, I assume, it made them feel like they were still somewhat attached to their sex and not their gender identity. And to someone who feels ostracised in their own body, it must’ve felt somewhat immutable to Cal. In episode 8, we see that they change the fundraising to actually be donated to Cal’s top surgery, due to the church declining the donation. The donation toward Cal induces a sense of community and familiarity within family’s and partnerships.. 

Another thing we go deeper into is Ruby and her feelings, her past and her present. Ruby becomes vastly humanised in season 4, whereas previous seasons she was more like a Barbie. She looked good and it wasn’t that much. We understand the ostracisation she endured as an
adolescent which caused her to need popularity in order for her to feel good. Her need for external validation is almost inherent. And she comes to the epiphany, that maybe, being kind isn’t only for the benefits of the people around us but also because it can really help oneself too. 

Thennnn we see Eric, and his church starting to be more open towards the ideas of something beyond heteronormativity. The ending of season 4, is centred around growth, overcoming all sorts of obstacles, and just having each other because you can’t always do everything alone. People do need people. 

the ending… can it be it??? Is this really all it is? That Maeve is in America, Otis is in England, and that’s it? We don’t get a bigger, more happy ending??? I pray God gives us a season 5, or even a special episode..
