Could you elaborate on the spite part? I fully agree with the character death part and utterly despised that. But u felt that other scene at least treated its subject matter seriously, but if the whole scene was made for bad reasons I’d like to know about it.

Story goes! Joss Whedon was quite angry at Spike popularity, he was never meant to be a regular, he would only be like the typical monster of the week character but the character's popularity made him unable to write him off. So in an attempt to make Spike less likeable and make viewers see he's not a good guy (despite this season hammering that alot) they made him do... that

Damn. I actually wasn’t fully against it since 1) Spike is evil so I wouldn’t fully put this past him 2) While I like Spike and Buffy as a toxic ship, I don’t have a problem with them hammering in that their relationship isn’t one to be romanticized. But it being out of spite for a character being popular that’s definitely a shittier motive.

Yeah, there's alot of discussion about if Spike really was that evil, I personally don't choose to believe so but it's such a foul thing to do. Really shitty spot to put both the actors too James Marsters was extremely uncomfortable with the scene to the point he had to do some therapy

Oh jeez, I did not know about the stuff with Marsters but that does make me hate the episode and Whedon more. I will say I was fine with the scene on its own since it at least portrays the act as deplorable (which is more than they did with Buffy and Angel’s relationship). And while it’s definitely harder to sit through, after murdering so many I wouldn’t put sexual assault past Spike. But if it was traumatizing to the actors that’s a whole other story and gets into a different field of wrong.
