The Sopranos has been one of the most powerful, influential, and unforgettable viewing experiences I've ever had. I'm so glad I finally got the chance to experience this amazing show. The Sopranos is completely different from anything I've ever seen on TV. Best series I've watched so far.
I have to give a big shout-out to David Chase for making The Sopranos not a typical mafia/gangster story as I initially thought, but more complex than that. David Chase chose to approach and portray everything that happens in the show in a realistic, life-like manner. David Chase also seamlessly blends various genres in his work, such as; the fusion of brutal explicit violence with suggestive dreams and visual poetry that further distinguishes this show from all the dramas produced before and after it. Not to mention how David Chase cleverly provides small details so that everything is not explained in detail and explicitly. But that doesn't mean all questions have answers, because in this gray life and world we will never have absolute answers, everything is still filled with ambiguity. Here lies the courage and genius of David Chase once again.
The Sopranos is a raw piece of art, as the series is not driven by plot, but by the characters and the real truth about them. It was a character study of many well-written characters that keeps us engaged with the narrative. All of the characters had different personalities and roles (just like life) and how they all gets a good portion of the depth of each character.
But as I mentioned above, The Sopranos is not just about the usual gangster/mafia stories and disputes, it is also a soulful meditation on life, death, the universe, existentialism, nihilism, religion, faith, divinity, the afterlife, and good vs evil. All these philosophical themes are presented and told nicely through verbal and visual storytelling that was slick and able to made me reflect on it.
In the end, The Sopranos is a brutal, disturbing, thought-provoking and heartbreaking watch. Thank you David Chase for the best television show ever. Now I'm left wondering what's next, can I live my life without The Sopranos? Because this show has become a part of my life and by the time I've finished it, a part of me seems to have left with it.
