Thematically interesting, with an awesome comic book-noir art style and characters with depth. So why does it only barely work? I tried to find an answer each time I saw a new episode, trying to understand why this series was never compelling to me, despite having a lot of the right ingredients. I suppose the biggest flaw might be its lack of essence. This is a generally serious show, but it can't be all that serious because a lot of time is spent on the action and not on character. The action is serviceable, but it doesn't utilize its visual style to its biggest potential to create impactful imagery. It sometimes has jokes but they only break the serious mood and they're never really that funny. The story is very intriguing but never really develops into anything beyond an interesting concept; and that's without mentioning that the story itself is incomplete, since the show was cancelled after a cliffhanger (I like to think the story actually ends there. It's funnier that way). Perhaps if the series continued after its first and only season, some of these things could have been developed further. I know I was just starting to get somewhat invested in the last 4 episodes. But we only have this, and for what it is, it's a more consistent series than the previous 1994 series and has aged much better, but is ultimately not as memorable. I think I'll just stick with Spectacular Spider-Man.
