Columbo (1971)
When the first explosion happened and it paused the frame to start showing the credits I yelled "FUCK YEAH" at my TV. Blessed. Beautiful. Style. Class. Charm. The moment. This is probably the saddest one to watch the villain go through not in terms of "oh boo hoo I am sad for him" (dude was an asshole) but in terms of like, he'd done it, man. He had gotten away with it and then he moved too fast and too stupidly in his attempts to cover his tracks and just activated all of Columbo's trap cards at once. If he'd even waited a single week he probably could have gotten away with it, but, alas. Especially since Columbo knew that the door had been open all along! Ah, y'know, I know it's all about playing it close to your chest and all when you know something like this, but I feel like this is one of those things where the killer should have just gone "yeah man that's a fuckin' mystery innit" and just went on his way, but instead he tries to solve the mystery for Columbo, crafting new keys and trying to plant them someone else. Ya had it, man. But you got vain about it and ya lost it. I also love the veteran, the guy who actually DOES the killing, going hard and just being incredibly into explosives. We love a man who knows how to use his hands! In his apartment writing The Anarchist's Cookbook, upset that people trying to blow things up aren't making good enough bombs. What a weirdo! If this episode was made today he would have been played by Walton Goggins. I did the math and it turns out the chili that Columbo's upset about costing $6, in modern money, would have cost $37. If I got a bowl of chili that cost me that much, I would also be like "this has to be a mistake!" I'd be on tiktok as a male karen for how much I didn't wanna pay for that and I don't even care!!!
