Under The Banner Of Heaven, as many would have you believe in indeed, True Detective with Mormons. And it’s with that subject matter where I think this series succeeds in standing out in the wealth of true crime miniseries.
First you have the mystery, as many of the people watching this probably won’t, i knew absolutely nothing about Mormonism, the LDS church or fundamentalist attitudes but UTBOH does incredibly well at not only introducing you to these concepts slowly, but also portraying them in a way where any of the characters are needed for huge info dumps which I appreciate. It lets you learn about Mormonism at your own pace yet doesn’t apply stabilisers.
Under The Banner also utilises it’s cast to the fullest, not only do Garfield and Edgar-Jones shine here but Sam Worthington and Wyatt Russel absolutely steal the show as two detrimentally devout brothers, their decent into cultish and erratic tendencies being all too believable as the show progresses.
It does have its issues however, as events start to spiral, Under The Banner starts to bring direct parallels to the story with recreations of old 1800’s Mormon stories. These scene brutally slowing everything down to a halt, even getting to point where they take up half of episode 5. From what I’ve gathered, they’re super inaccessible to the average viewer with the way they’re so scattered and ultimately serve to do the opposite of draw parallels by drawing confusion in its audience.
Ultimately Under The Banner Of Heaven is a chilling spotlight on an all too crooked and twisted religion. It lets you explore that same twisted nature alongside its characters, who while not all get the time to shine in such a tight episode limit, satisfyingly provide enough to carry on through the end.
