“Rainy days can be fun too.”
what k-on doesn’t succeed in is made up for by the atmosphere and its perfect blend of mature (well, mostly mature) characters and dialogue and the goofy, carefree fun those characters all have. the story’s conflicts are summoned not from school bullies or love triangles but from the characters’ internal hopes and wills to be the best they can be, which sounds dull and corny but naoko yamada (director of the somehow not academy award-nominated masterpiece a silent voice) manages to turn it into one of the most entertaining anime i’ve seen in ages. hell, even the characters are never negative towards each other; their criticisms are always constructive but they always dissolve at the sight of tea and sweets. even when there aren’t plot points driving it forward it’s still endlessly absorbing entertainment. the entire show can be summed up with this quote (that came from the woman the myth the legend tsumugi herself): “i might be found dead tomorrow from a happiness overdose!” mugi best girl.
