The vast majority of cartoons from the 1970's and 80's are notorious from having consistently mediocre writing. The Transformers is no exception, but it does stand out by having 90% of each episode focus on non-stop action between giant robots. It's a series that knows what it does best and embraces it.
Is the action mindless? Absolutely, but it's decently made, so for an 80's kid this must have been like watching an animated Star Wars on their TV.
