Girls (2012)
I can’t believe I finished this show. I've known about Girls and heard people talk about it for almost a decade—from friends and the internet—always seeing that simple yet eye-catching season 6 poster. It never once crossed my mind to actually watch it because it didn’t interest me, and I always pictured it as this extremely long TV show that would take months to finish. But I ended up watching the entire show in just 10 days. I’m not a big rewatcher, especially with TV shows. Since leaving my childhood behind, I’m pretty sure the only show I've rewatched is Freaks and Geeks (which is also a Judd Apatow project). But I can say with certainty that I might consider rewatching Girls sometime in the near future. Right from the start, Lena Dunham made it clear that the title of the show is Girls, not Friends. These four individuals, along with the supporting characters, feel like real people. There’s no clear path in any of their lives—no soulmates, no dreams coming true, and no neat endings. There’s no “perfect job” leading to a happy life, and that’s what makes this show different from others. Hannah, Marnie, Jessa, and Shoshanna aren’t always together and don’t share the screen for 99% of the show. And the few times they do, it usually ends in shouting and chaos. It’s clear that they hate each other most of the time. They’re not there for each other during the important moments of their lives, and that’s okay. That’s adulthood. Everything about adult life is complicated and difficult to understand. You’ll make a lot of enemies, including yourself. You’ll be cheated on, face constant disappointment, and fight battles that often feel impossible to win. Along the way, you’ll lose friends who were once the most important people in your life. Life is brutal, and it doesn’t end with a wedding scene and a kiss. You’re just left to do your best to get by. And try you must, because it’s the only thing keeping you from the other side of the dirt. I loved the needle drops, the acting, and the constant chaos. I think Girls gave me a bit of confidence, like a parent saying, “Live your life, build experiences and memories, but try to avoid bad decisions. Not every day will be alright, but there will be days that make you feel okay.”
