For an episode about a character that has been one of the least interesting so far, you do grab your heart a bit. But that wasn't necessary at all, as it fortunately turns out. In terms of both style and story, this episode is very welcome.
Story-wise, this episode really manages to add a lot to the whole and you slowly get a broader and clearer picture of what exactly happened. Also, the connections and history between the various characters become clearer. I would even say that this is the episode that added the most to the series in terms of story.
But also in terms of style, this fourth episode is a welcome addition. A style that could be described more as a thriller, without losing sight of the comedy, of course. So it's very clever how easily this episode manages to mix different styles. It manages to be both suspenseful and funny without one getting in the way of the other.
No, Chelsea, played by Ilana Glazer, is still not the most sympathetic character the series has to offer, but seeing what role she plays in the big picture remains thankfully interesting to watch in this episode. It also helps the other characters grow and the mystery continues to deepen. Somehow, you don't feel like you're any closer to the answer either, but that's not necessarily something you'd expect from a fourth episode of an eight-part series.
It's an episode that thankfully also makes room again for the victim, played by Dave Franco. So far, he really is one of the highlights. It's also good how the series tries to keep a central focus with the characters trying to solve the murder, so that all the episodes wouldn't come across as standalone episodes. It really forms a good whole, which also makes "The Afterparty" a series that is ideal for binging. The length of the episodes also feels just short/long enough for that.
Even if this episode isn't the most entertaining, it's the one that feels the most "mature" and also adds more to the story, which definitely makes it a successful - and also very welcome - episode as the centerpiece of this season.
