I’m sorta mixed on this season. It’s sorta funny since it gave a lot of iconic and great versions of characters we already know and love, from Lois Lane to Jimmy Olsen to Perry White to Toyman to Parasite to Metallo to Lobo to Lex Luthor ESPECIALLY, the list goes on. Unfortunately I think the only new character introduced in this show that I think is actually worth a damn is Mercy Graves and Livewire’s waiting until next season. Funnily enough though my biggest problem is with how Superman is written and it’s not so much a flaw, more so a time capsule from the pre 2000s. In this current age especially, I feel like we’ve basically perfected the writing for Clark Kent looking past the garbage that is Injustice and the DCEU. Birthright and Smashes the Klan are fantastic books, Vs. The Elite and Death of Superman are fantastic movies and My Adventures With Superman is looking to have my personal favorite adaptation of Clark outside of books. The thing is that in STAS I just… don’t find Superman to be that compelling of a character. Even putting aside the lack of difference between Clark and Superman’s mannerisms which leads to a more flat version of the character, a lot of the themes presented in other Superman media just are not present. This is what has me excited for MAWS, I want to see a Superman show where Clark comes to terms with his heritage, he has a round character and we actually see him struggle not just as Superman but as Clark Kent. Funnily enough, the 1978 movie is much better in this regard and pretty much has everything I look for in Superman’s character. Yes I like seeing Clark be a bit of a goofball, fight me. Solid season overall but yeah the character work for the title character isn’t very good and other aspects such as the action and some episodes (Two’s a Crowd ESPECIALLY) really suffer for it.
