Season 2 ended on an interesting note. Although our protagonists, Brooke and Cary, had done bad things throughout the show, it was always brushed aside in the sort of consequence-free space you expect from a comedy. But the Season 2 finale suddenly pulls the rug out from under you and makes you consider the actual ramifications of what these two have done for the people around them. While it's focused primarily on how it affects their mom and brother, it's pretty evident this marks a sort of shift in how the show planned to view its characters.
Season 3 goes to just about all the places you'd expect with that ending. Though it takes place in a much more heightened reality than even the previous two seasons, it uses the fact that it is not limited by something as restrictive as the rules of the real world to explore much more extreme versions of these deeply flawed people. Like many good HBO shows this year, you get to watch them all double down on their worst instincts and become the most horrible versions of themselves. It's delicious watching them destroy everything they have around them just for the slightest chance of fulfilling their dreams. There truly isn't anything better than a good fall from grace.
I'm sad to see this show suddenly end, as literally up until yesterday night I had assumed a Season 4 was practically guaranteed. If the reports that the showrunners were incredibly toxic to the writers and crew are true, then perhaps it's for the best. That being said, despite only starting this show last week, I can't say I'm not gonna miss the moronic characters they created.
