i have talked about this show endlessly on twitter, so i won't bore y'all with ALL that analysis. some highlights:
- the show is narrated by sheila's inner voice, which is compromised by her ED. thus it forces the viewer to see the entire story through the lens of her ED; it doesn’t ever take a backseat to other aspects of her life. she is immediately linked to the cruelty that her ED thrusts upon her, but its inclusion shows the internal shame of having these thoughts and guilt her actions cause.
- this show doesn't show EDs in a positive or glamorous light, but it ALSO doesn't assign them a morality, which i adore. sheila is a complete cunt outside of her ED, which enables her bad behavior but doesn't cause it. example: sheila treats greta poorly by mentally body shaming her and stealing from her, but only one is a real mark on her character and causes harm; she fights her ED voice in order to form a real relationship with her. sheila’s actions are objectively bad, but sheila is also an objectively fucked up person due to a presence within her that fights her conscience for control.
- the show responsibly differentiates what actions are motivated by her 3D and what's just /her/. it doesn’t relinquish responsibility for her bad behavior but does emphasize how they come with 3Ds (lying, hiding, presenteeism, etc) and are ingrained into other aspects of her life.
- no matter how many times sheila says aerobics "saved her", she can't fix herself to positively impact her evolution, even if she’s having fun. it only heightens her desire to self-sabotage. it's just another addiction.
- once sheila becomes successful and people find out about her ED, her actual achievements are diminished because she didn't get her physique from the aerobics she's selling. that said, is it a mark on her character? how much of that is the ED? how can she live as her beyond it? will she always be inextricably linked to her mental illness – to herself or others? the show doesn't answer but explores these questions.
- the show explores aspects of control and what that looks like, explaining but not excusing sheila's mental illness. vinnie green being controlled by his circumstances and his wife. bunny by her envy and anger. danny by his past. sheila's mother by the pressure to keep the perfect family image. sheila by her desire to be something more. only when sheila recognizes her "ED voice" in the figures that haunt others in her life does she realize she can separate herself from hers.
- sheila's journey is extremely nonlinear, and one can argue that while her behaviors changed, her psyche didn't. it just evolved into something expressed more externally. she collapses in on herself for a number of reasons, not just her ED (which is part of why the voice separation at the end of s2 bothers me so much) which are all finally addressed but never fixed. the recovery episode itself has blatant statements about it all being a process. 

i love this show and am so sad it's ending. i hope we get more questions left explored but never answered.
