Though I would never call it bad, Ted Lasso’s third (and hopefully last) season is extremely messy. It has some of the best moments of the show (that Hey Jude scene being the first that comes to mind), while also having what seem to be by far some of the worst episodes (that same episode is mainly devoted to a Keely subplot that’s just fucking stupid). It has some great character development in it, specifically involving Nate and the relationship between Roy Kent and Jamie, but they really had no idea what to do with most of the other characters (specifically Danny, who the writers really don’t take seriously this season. He’s just turned into a joke at this point. And it’s a joke that gets really old.) Keely is perhaps the worst example of the character development this season, as so much of the show is devoted to her despite her being the least interesting one involved. Who knew that the only reason she was ever likable was because of her relationship with Roy Kent. I didn’t need half of every episode devoted to her, and honestly the season would’ve probably been paced better without it. I really wish they spent less time focusing on her and more time focusing on Ted Lasso (the guy the show’s named after). As an audience, we know about Ted’s panic attacks and about his insecurities, but we rarely get to see them, and when we do it’s never enough. There’s a lot more potential there that they really don’t dig into. The finale was nice (if not a little ridiculous towards the end, and only because of that thing with Rebecca and that stupid boat guy which I also hate). And even though I’m describing this season like it’s really bad, it really isn’t. Because between all the filler there are some great things. I’m hoping they actually stick with ending it here, because I don’t know how many more seasons I can watch if they’re all gonna be like this.
