Not only is there literally double the amount of sex and nudity in the pilot for Game of Thrones (which has virtually no meaning), any sex and nudity present here is very obviously a critique of the toxic nature of this industry—especially towards women and the inequality in terms of what is seen as “too much” or being “slutty” in opposition to what is seen the same way for men. Which, far more often than not, isn’t even close to being the same.
A man has an image or video leaked like that of Jocelyn’s here, then he’s a chad. A woman has that happen, and she’s a slut. That inequality is what this show is commenting on, with much more meaning and a much more tame nature than other popular HBO shows.
And yes, there are certain shots and scenes here that feel unneeded, yet there are similar shots and scenes of men in other shows doing the exact same or similar thing to themselves and with other people and they’re seen as perfectly fine. They’re equally unneeded when men do them, though, and again, few people complain about it.
It’s well shot, well directed, well acted, clearly portrays everything we see as wrong (just glamourised, much like in Euphoria) and so far comments on what it’s trying to satirically and effectively.
I do believe some shots aren’t necessarily needed, but at the worst it’s a mishandling of execution, and not exploitation. I do believe it’s a story that should be told by a woman, but I don’t yet see Levinson telling it actively poorly.
