I found it hard to care about big things that happened in this season because all the characters are so silly – I guess I prefer a show that goes for more realism. I know it’s probably part of the humour but it’s just not the sort of thing that works for me. I find typically british humour more appealing, something more dry and subtle and woven into the writing instead of these crazy goofy people who don’t act like normal human beings and are just absurd caricatures basically. I’m of the belief that you can have something that’s equal parts thriller and comedy without having to mix them both in every single scene. barry has a really cool concept but I think this first season would’ve worked better if the crime stuff had been more intense, and if it had more serious, realistic characters to make the stakes feel higher. a show can easily be hilarious with just a few comic relief characters, and with serious characters getting funny lines here and there, but with everyone being insane in any given moment I just felt a disconnect and their surrealism ruined all the important moments for me. of course, this show is very popular so none of these criticisms are necessary, but they’re the reasons why I didn’t enjoy this season of TV personally. I’m still hopeful that I might like it more as I progress. it keeps me entertained regardless
