A season I feel made sense in what it was trying to say but the delivery was off for me. This should’ve been split into two seasons because man it felt rushed. The endings for the main characters has been a big talking point for a lot of people and honestly I liked basically of them, even loved a couple of them, but again they should’ve had way more time to develop in my opinion.
I thought the best part about the ending was Sally/John’s endings and Fuches. I’m a fan of how Sally and John’s tie back to the shows central theme of the lies we tell ourselves to push forward. Sally learns nothing in the end and got off scott free basically even though she was definitely a bad person. John has this diluted image of his father that will allow him to have a *less* fucked up upbringing, even though deep down maybe even he knows it’s a lie. I think Jim Moss was drawing dead in his investigation but he so desperately wants to have closure with Janice that he tells himself a lie that it was Gene, and I doubt he truly believes it, but maybe that will help him move on.
I think Fuches and Barry’s final scene is perfection and just makes so much sense within the context of how their relationship has been the whole series.
Hank’s ending is the hardest for me to really grasp how I feel because I think it works fine, again tying to the theme of the lies we tell ourselves. He’d rather die thinking he was fighting for Cristobal’s honor and the perception that he wasn’t the one who got him killed than admit it was his fault and continue living. I think all that works fine but again it could’ve been developed for a way longer period of time and it feels so jarring because we barely see him after this time skip to see this arc.
This is honestly my least favorite season because the seeds are there for something truly generational but it’s just rushed and wasn’t given enough time to breathe, which is disappointing. But, I will say the ending was mostly fulfilling and i’m extremely excited to see what Bill Hader does moving forward in his career because he proved with this show that he’s an exceptional director and writer.
