You either love or hate this show. I’ve seen people call Hyouka boring, and i’d be lying if I said I didn’t kinda agree with them, so why am I giving this 4.5 stars? For me personally Hyouka is an excellent slice of life show, with good characters, and some good mysteries, along with a brewing romance that while not really getting the light of the day at all, is still there. The main takeaway from this show is the mystery aspect of it. Hyouka doesn’t really have a storyline/plot at all, and the main focus of the show is the mysteries that the main cast of characters solve, and when I say mysteries I’m not talking about murder or anything, so don’t go in expecting that lol. The mysteries themselves are pretty interesting, and it’s fun to see the characters (mainly Houtarou) solve them. Speaking of characters they’re all decent, but the main character Houtarou is great. He has some solid growth/development, and it’s nice seeing him gradually change as the show goes on. He’s also crazy smart, and is fairly like-able to begin with, so watching him do his thing was always really enjoyable for me. As for the other characters, they honestly could’ve used more time in the spotlight, along with some more development, but I still liked them all. The ending is honestly a bit underwhelming due to the fact this is essentially an unfinished adaptation of a light novel, so the “story” just kinda stops, when it feels like it should keep going. Besides that however, I think Hyouka is a really solid slice of life show to put on when you just feel like relaxing. If you wanna give this show a shot but aren’t too sure about it, i’d say watch the first 3-5 episodes, and if you’re still not feeling it after that just drop it.
