expensively-made and well-acted but did start to feel a bit silly to watch a russian arthouse cinematographer forced to recreate the exact compositions and camera movements out of certain cutscenes of the game. also makes some strange detours in how it chooses to spend its dramatic time (lingering/repeating on some of the derivative beats and then speed-running some of the more interesting ones), and feels like they pulled back a bit on making joel as horrifyingly ugly and brutal as he's meant to be until it was too late. nulled the effect of the ending a bit for me personally. was pretty easy to throw on each week tho and certainly has some affecting moments between the two leads. and did consistently get a kick out of seeing how some of the functionality of the game made its way into the story. the same way comic book nerds get stoked when a reference to obscure lore pops up was happening to me when one of the little characters squeezes through a tight space and circles back to push a desk out of the way of a door for one of the bigger ones.
