I've mostly been going through this site to log and rate the shows I've seen with plans to circle back around and review some of them. However, simply rating this show feels wrong- mostly because I don't feel like there is any rating that can "sum up" this show with any semblance of accuracy. At it's best, this show is borderline unrivaled. At it's worst... it's pretty damn bad. Unfortunately, it's "worst" is the ending, which is a shame. This wasn't the first or the last time that a show was plagued with poor ending, but personally I don't think there's ever been such a contrast between a strong start and a weak finish. Sure, the show's writing declined a bit in later seasons... but if the ending had been good, this show would have been in my top 10. Maybe even top 5. With the ending, it's not even in my top 20 which is a shame. In some ways, anything below a 4.5 would feel like a disservice to the show. In other ways, anything over a 2.5 seems incredibly generous. With other shows that started off strong and end poorly, I typically just give an "average" rating somewhere in the middle- but that feels wrong based on just how good this show was in its prime. So I made a choice to give it a 4/5, but really there isn't a rating for this show. There is only the fact that the first few seasons were the best TV has to offer, the mid to later seasons were thrilling if at times flawed, and the ending was a rushed trainwreck.
