so this is where the fun begins. the start of eva as an action-packed “monster of the week” show and also the start of asuka’s debilitating passage of needing to prove herself. there’s a few shots in here that i totally overlooked of the giant sunken city underneath the ocean. it’s just another detail that gives depth to this dystopian “lonely earth”, and each biblical reference makes me think of this world trying to escape god, or at least, create their own. also, this has one of my favorite gags in the show: shinji trying to think in german.
