certainly a show, i guess. but not a good one. the entire thing just feels very inauthentic to me, from the cheap, shein looking wardrobe to the shallow character work. the actors do their best, trying desperately to pull meat from the bone, but they never come away with anything of substance. the script constantly says, daisy is the somebody. a talent of a generation. but when is it shown? when is she anyone more than someone who thinks she's just entitled to this because she writes indie tumblrgirl lyrics??
but it's not just her. i don't think i learned a single thing about any one of these characters. they all feel fluid, perpetually in motion, doing whatever serves the plot in the moment instead of being actual characters in the plot. the show is obviously Daisy And Billy but there is still a dozen ways they could have showcased personality for everyone else, starting with the wardrobe — but the costume design just feels like a bad imitation of the 70s (and let's just not even get into the horrible "attempt" ageing in the interview portions.) there isn't enough dirt and grit to sell the rockstar life. the production just looks to clean, down to the way it's shot. it's all just pretty disappointing.
the only real thing i can praise is the music — personally, i think billy sounds a little like tom petty, btw, and i really enjoyed the songs because of that. but nothin else hit. might take the book off my tbr, bc i don't think i'll get much out of it after watching this.
