It’s sad that most of the book’s complexities were watered down to produce a bland adaptation full of unnecessary love triangle drama. Reducing the pivotal final scene between Camila and Daisy to a fight over Billy undermines the message the book tried to send about these two characters and their dynamic. Daisy was decently adapted but underdeveloped. The writers chose to gloss over her struggles with addiction and instead decided to give the audience a million scenes of the band performing the same songs over and over again. Billy wasn’t a compelling character in the book, but he at least had enough charisma to be convincing as the “rock star” of the band. Billy lacks any semblance of a real personality in the show, making his scenes unbearably painful to watch. I adored Camila, despite the fact that she was a significantly less nuanced version of her book counterpart. But what’s the point of having such a fantastic character if she gets little to no screen time? Karen’s character was changed just for the sake of changing it, which ends up being detrimental to her arc (or lack thereof). She only ever gets screen time if it involves her relationship with Graham in some way. Graham exists for the same reason as Karen. You wouldn’t even remember he was Billy’s brother if the characters didn’t bring it up. Eddie is there for whenever the plot requires conflict. Warren is just there. Camila Morrone gave an incredible performance. She was the standout of the entire season for me. Tom Wright was great as well. The rest of the performances were disappointing.
