If I was reviewing the last few minutes of this season, my rating would be significantly higher. I'd probably give it at least a seven or even an eight, because that ending was fantastic.
Unfortunately, everything leading up to it was horrifically abysmal. Absolutely hilariously awful.
I wasn't a massive fan of season one, but the things I found interesting kept me invested through the season. And every single one of those elements is non-existent here.
The political intrigue and criticism of imperialism is almost entirely gone; Britannia is still *there*, but instead of being a representation of America's imperialism to Japan, it's now just some super evil thing with a focus on just killing God. A massive downgrade from what I originally found so interesting.
Even Lelouch's crazy mind games are just so boring here. Instead of watching Lelouch come up with excellent strategies as he fight, the strategic battles in this season boil down to this: "Haha! I've got you Lelouch! You fell right into my trap!" "That's where you're wrong...I knew you were going to do that! I predicted it! And now I have you in checkmate!" "What!? How can this be!? No!!!!!!" Basically, if you aren't a fan of the stupid mental battles in the last third of Death Note, you won't enjoy most of the battles here.
And to make this season even more insufferable, just about everything I didn't like from season one is even worse here. The annoying slice of life episodes are somehow even more unbearable and the weird sexualization of Kallen as well as the other girls is even more awkward and in your face (which is interesting, considering that the first season had nudity and this season doesn't lol). Though I'll give it this: now that the show became so stupid, it doesn't have the horrible tonal shifts that season one had. So that's something. I guess.
But then there's everything else wrong with this season. This season does so many things that are just so laughably horrible. The only saving grace of this season is that it's so hilarious, so poorly made, that I was constantly enthralled with its awfulness. It was like watching a car crash inside a falling plane.
The new characters are annoying, confusing, or boring (sometimes even all three!). I couldn't handle Rolo, or any other new character at all, though I think I give my crown of hatred to the weird guy with the orange hair who just showed up, threatened to sexually assault Kollin, then yelled about how much he loved killing people, and then died. A crazy joke of a character.
The writing is god awful, and I don't just mean that some moments are rushed of that there are "plot holes" or whatever, I mean there are entire scenes that are just full on incomprehensible. The story jumps around so quickly that it's impossible to connect scenes together in any reasonable manner. And then there's just stuff the show introduces that is either just to push the plot forward, or just has no payoff at all. Like Orange Boy's stupid Geass canceller that did nothing but push Shirly's story forward, or the time C2 lost her memories for like four episodes for no reason. There's just so many dumb choices that result in nothing happening, greatly overshadowed by the fact that for maybe a third of this entire season, I had no idea what was going on.
And this isn't helped at all by the absolutely god awful editing. During fight scenes, the show just repeatedly cuts to random, irrelevant conversations for only a few seconds, divulging no new information, before awkwardly returning to the battle like nothing happened at all. The amount of times they di this legitimately drove me insane, there were some episodes I struggled to even watch because I hated the editing so much. It's a bold statement, but I believe this season might have some of, if not *the* worst editing I've ever seen in anime. I truly despised it.
But with all that said, I still have to love Lelouch's stupid, dumb, incomprehensible plans. The plan to have Britannia exile Zero, and then have everyone just sort of dress up as Zero, thus resulting in all one million people being exiled (for some reason) was just so stupid but so funny. The same goes for every one of Lelouch's dumb big brained schemes. They shouldn't work, but they do, and that's what makes it so hilarious.
This season, in my honest opinion, isn't worth watching. At least not seriously. I started having way more fun once I stopped taking it seriously and just laughed at it. I'd recommend watching this while doing a drinking game or something, because it certainly isn't worth your attention sober.
