i rarely log anime on this app but this episode deserves it, as it is obviously a masterpiece but there is one specific scene that is one of the most complex showings of metaphoric symbolism that potrays thorfinns psychology in a way that is beyond masterful, and without a doubt is one of the best scenes i’ve seen (out of all forms of media)
as we all know thorfinn is looking down at what was his life of negativity, death, violence, barbaric ways and askeladd tells him to climb being a masterpiece of a metaphor on so many different levels
let’s break it down the first level of metaphors is the bottom pit of murderous dead bodies fighting each other, climbing on each others flesh to reach thorfinn to finally reach him just for the dead body to start crying displaying thorfinns guilt
the next level of this scene is thorfinn hanging and not going up or down, not knowing if he should face his guilt or move on and climb to the light
the third level of this scene is askeladd being thorfinns embodiment of subconscious, running through everything thorfinn feels
until finally his subconscious tells him to climb the cavern, climb the cavern of growth, the lowest point of thorfinn was his murderous ways and now he has to climb rock by rock to slowly grow and mature, the cavern showcasing the depth of guilt thorfinn has and how far he needs to climb just to be at peace of mind, this to thorfinn is the only the beginning to the climb of growth and development of his new ideology
this one scene portrays the psychology of thorfinn masterfully with the use of metaphoric symbolism
