have a lot to say about this: spent the day reading criticism of this show to fully be able to analyse this under an appropriate lens, also ordered the book just so i can soak this up. theres a lot stylistically i don’t like this falls into the trap of trying incredibly hard to be like fleabag within its humouress deadpan shots and narration at the camera which fully disrupts the sad hostility of the environment the show has going for it. this aspect becomes distracting and honestly slightly aggravating within the first episode. but to tell the truth: this is the first time ive ever cried at a show, a proper sit down and sob too one where i didn’t try and force myself to stop i just let myself weep for hours after the (6th) episode had finished. this show is a lot its a lot to process and so much of it feels familiar to what i have known but it tells the story of an underfunded nhs which is exhausting for everyone involved and miserable to see within this raw show. the patients the staff the receptionists the families are all so underfunded so misplaced with lack of resources and lack of humanity really its an upsetting and tiring job for everyone involved yet this show feels it all in a problematic and complicated but humane manner. this show hits particularly hard within covid times when the tory government further demeans the nhs by putting even more pressure on them as profit and political power is what they are for not the many people running in and out of the hospital its all so dehumanising. ive been in and out of using the mental health services my entire life and this despite the prominent issues which lie within the creations of its narrative and the last episode its a rewarding show especially within this political climate.and despite everything god bless the nhs jesus fucking christ.
