Poster for Spider-Man
I'll start a review with a hot take: Spider-Man TAS (or at the very least its 1st season) is kinda bad. Despite its reputation of being one of a few good Spider-Man cartoons (and at times being claimed as the best one), I've unfortunately been dissapointed by it and since I'm bored, I'm gonna review every season of this show. Let's start with show's biggest problems: it's technical aspects and pacing. I was honestly suprised by how weirdly messy its editing was: while it's not the worst thing in the world, it's definetly feels weird and out of place with the way shots would switch themself a bit too quickly which makes the dialouges and sounds feel misplaced. There would even be times when dialouges just straight up overlap in Xavier Renegade Angel's style like in one of episodes of Venom Saga for example. Tho I will also say that the editing's badness can also partly come from this show's underwhelming animation those stiffness and unpolishness makes it hard to fit sound and voice acting well However, while I think the editing is pretty bad, the worst offender in this show, as well as the thing that takes down other elements of the show with it, is pacing. To say that this show's pacing is fast would be an understatement - it's straight up rushed. Most of plot points and action scenes just move so fast and switch themselfs so unnaturaly that it feels like as if they only lasted seconds. Not only does it make the viewing of the show more tiresome than it should be, it also diminishes the impact of the scenes. The pacing just doesn't let the scene breath and it doesn't give enough time to really connect with characters and what they're going through. Plus, since the pacing is so fast and doesn't give that much room for scenes, it specificaly damages the impact of Peter's unsatisfaction with his Spider-Man life since that kind of problem would usually require some time to get this point across well enough but the pacing only allows Peter to complain about being Spider-Man only because of one bad day he had, which as a result just makes Peter seem like a crybaby. And lastly, the score for the show is really forgettable. It's not bad per say but it doesn't really do it's job as well as it could and it can honestly feel boring and uninspired which does affect the scene and it's mood. Now I've already criticised this show enough so I'll finish this section witg one thing this show did right - dialouges and voice acting. I really love the voice acting of this show and I think it does a great job at portraining character's personalities to the point where it actually makes characters themselfs quite good since their voice acting make a seemingly basic personality pretty fun and memorable. While the dialouges in this show can get cheesy at times, and one thing I also dislike in this show is how Peter would describe the things he do and the things that happen around him (as if we can't understand it ourselfs), I still think the dialouges in this show are pretty fun and combined with great voice acting, they make this show bearable to watch. And now let's talk about the story and characters. I think the characters are mostly ok. I don't like Peter that much yet, but I do think he has a potential to be a good character and the show does seem to put a lot of effort to develop him so that's nice to see. I don't really have that much to say about the supporting cast of the show since they're all just ok and they don't have anything special about their personalities, aside from JJJ, I think he's pretty neat and I like his voice actor. I wouldn't have talked about villians that much either since they also seemed to be quite basic, however, they probably have the best voice acting in the show and that fact alone greatly improves some of villians' more basic personalities. Special mention goes to Wilson Fisk who I consider to be the best character in the show so far. Not only does he has an amazing voice acting, his personality (even stripped of voice) is pretty interesting and the show did a good job at establishing Kingpin as quite smart and threatning. Before we finish the review, I also want to mention that aside from developing characters, this show at times would try to deliver themes like responsebility and choice. It's not exactly great at that but I do believe it has potential to be pretty good. Overall, I was quite dissapointed by the first season of Spider-Man TAS (especially seeing how many people claim it to be great). However, I still have a little bit of hope that it'll get better, especially when it honestly feel like the problems of the show might just come from a lack of budget and time (I'm not sure if that's the case, just speculating). So yeah, it's kinda bad but I'll give it another try next time
