Oz (1997)
I tried to do the most spoiler-free review possible but there’s so much going on in this episode that there might be a few hints here and there due to how it is so hard to not write more in substance about it. It’s completely crazy, this feeling I had seeing for the "first time" the sunlight, considering that this show take place almost exclusively inside the walls, the discomfort feeling & even suffocating throughout the show, makes this scene even a lot more impactful, I felt as free as he was. Perhaps my favorite scene of the whole show but the outcome makes me a little indecisive. The episode itself might be the most eventful of Oz. On the one hand, it makes the episode so thrilling to watch & really just so entertaining all around but on the other, while I don’t think there’s significant flaws, it goes a little too far sometimes for me. Once again, every character’s arc is pretty brilliant here, Beecher’s stuff is the best, without spoiling, it does remind you the harsh reality of Oz. Saïd who’s tremendously related to Beecher here in every scenes he’s again just so well layered as a character, even though it’s not the deepest thing they did with him, it's so much in line with what they've done this whole season. O’Reily here is also just pretty excellent, in any case, I think it's the three characters who stand out in the show. The dream scenes and its outcome are about as cruel as this show is, I love the theme of false freedom here even though I quite think, it could have been a fitting conclusion. Makes me very dubious, on one side I really appreciated how it’s in line with the show’s themes but if later on they don’t give him a great conclusion, I would consider it as a waste. All I can do now is hope they’ll know what to do with him for the later seasons. Anyway, it’s pretty easily one of my show’s favorites, while I was watching I even wondered if it wasn’t but I find that the episode goes a little too far, I need to think about it a bit but regardless, I really enjoyed it a lot. Feels like a monster to not give it a 5 but it’s not really far I guess. 👍
