I think my favourite part of the show so far, and the reason I loved this episode so much, is the found family trope. I just fucking love it when a band of misfits and "fuckups" that no one believes in or in their purpose gets together and there is this team play going and you see everyone start to shine. We saw it last episode when Prez cracked the pagers code. We saw it this episode with Lester explaining to Prez how all the pieces matter. We've been seeing it with McNulty and Kima. And finally, with Daniels, giving up his "chain of command" BS for the sake of the unit. We saw how he tried and almost gave up, but then McNulty wound him up enough with the picture of the dead guy. Got Daniels going. And they were able to save the Unit for one more month. They are all starting to rub off on each other, and every interaction between each member is just gold. "It cost you?" Lester asked Daniels, despite both of them knowing it 100% did. Then, Daniels walks back into his office, looks at the pictures of the dead boy, and probably thinks, "But it was worth it." Something we haven't seen Daniels go through since the show started, and already it shows how everyone's stances are shifting and how everyone's heart is in this job now. I LOVE IT SO MUCHHHH.
