So this episode has 3 plotlines 1. Annette fighting and killing her former slave master. the problem with this is that Annette doesn't really have a personality. she has character traits: she used to be a slave, and she can do magic. But she doesn't really have a personality aside from being argumentative. There are lots of personality traits that she could have. Her past as a slave might make her extremely anxious or even very selfless, conditioned to view herself as being less worthy of life than others. or her ability to do magic might make her extremely religious and loyal to her friends and family. But nope! She's basically just argumentative, she even scolds maria for wanting to know if Richter is ok?? Wtf was that. She's both a selfish asshole and also the person that the audience is supposed to side with no matter what. 2. The second plotline has Richter second guess his life as a vampire hunter due to his inability to face Olrox, this is done really well and has an awesome fight scene, no notes 3. The final plotline concerts the abbot and Maria and it genuinely might be the worst. It's essentially just an argument where the abbot says "religion is good because it can comfort people" and Maria says "revolution is good because of freedom" this is a fucking stupid and ridiculous argument and makes both sides seem extremely naive. Those two things do have legitimate pros and cons but if the show was actually honest about that it would have to cede the fact that revolution is obviously the better option despite it's downsides and because they want to argument to seem like both sides have the same amount of merit they just have to make it a fucking stupid stawman. God that pissed me off. In a show that pretends to be so adult and mature and yet you don't even respect your audience enough to make an actual complicated argument for values that could be reasonably debated?
