i’ve been thinking about this episode for the past couple of days. i think it bothered me that we were getting the backstory through third party perspective rather than a firsthand view of what happened, bc we don’t know which of these folks are reliable. i understood that the longer scenes that were more emotional and more true to Midge and Susie were the real events, but still. idk, i usually don’t mind it, but this bothered me a bit — i think it’s bc i like the characters a lot lmao. like i wish the back and forth, past to future flashes were less, and that we got more of what happened. like i didn’t mind it if the episode were longer, as long as we saw more of the past, i suppose. 

while i love Susie and know that she deserves so much better than what she’s gotten on the show, especially in terms of treatment from Joel, i also know that she fucked up bigtime with the mob and when she lost Midge’s money while gambling. so of course, Midge and anyone that’s mad at her for that have every right to be mad at her for it. the scene in the synagogue was heartbreaking on both sides, but Susie really really fucked up. despite being aware of this, we also see that Susie has always had Midge’s back, no matter what. the wedding scene and how Susie had to do everything for Midge…i can’t imagine how many of that she had to do throughout their years working together. but the fuck up that lead to Joel’s arrest is too big. 

if it weren’t for Joel though, Midge would’ve been the one in prison for 15 years, which would’ve been insane !! all because of Susie and the mob. i do wish there was a way she somehow could’ve gotten out of it. but cutting ties with Nicky and Frank would also mean giving up her office and her home. i believe that she even sort of considered it when they were threatening her during Midge’s garbage performance (literally). but then all the favors the mob was asking of both Susie and Midge, Midge not understanding that this was more or less a favor rather than a real standup … it’s a lot. it’s a lot and it’s very complex. 

i also think it’s wild that Midge had to be the one to reach out to Susie through the video when it was Susie’s royal fuck up that led to them splitting up. and then Susie didn’t want anyone to bring Midge up at all? it’s understandable that it’s painful but girl YOU fucked up. which hurts to say because it’s true, and in spite of all the hard work Susie put into Midge becoming a famous comedian. But i guess at the same time it’s understandable, since Susie was the one that fucked her over. and Midge needed time to finally forgive her. 

but then Midge saying that’s she’s still in love with Joel, like…girl 😭 i get it though. my sister, while she was watching s2-s3, said that she thought Midge and Joel would be endgame. i wondered why she said that, and she said it’s because we’re still seeing Joel. we’re still seeing his family and his life. i mostly thought that we’re getting to see his side of the story because they have kids together and because Midge still kept going to him for help and so on. as the show progressed, i started liking him a lot as well. but what he did to Midge, for a long time, is difficult to forgive. that’s a personal opinion though, seeing as Midge has forgiven him for his prolonged cheating.

and i’m glad that i got to see Abe and Rose again, before their deaths as we establish later on. 

this episode was a lot, so i’m glad i let it marinate for two days. great writing from this show as usual.
